well deviantART uses deviantwatches instead of friends so friends can be one sided, by that i mean, you can be someones friend but they dont have to be your friend too!
If you like someones art you should add them to your deviantwatch by clicking the "deviantwatch" button on the top right side of their profile page! Then you will recieve all updates from them in your message centre!
