Description
"Remember...."My attempt to depict the ending scene of the Lion King in a more realistic fashion. As Simba ascends to the summit he looks to the sky with uncertainty, and hears his father's affirmation, before proceeding to roar triumphantly.
I planned to make this last year after seeing the Lion King remake, but never finished the piece and Photoshop stopped working:

IMO the live-action take on this scene was underwhelming in comparsion the the positively euphoric scene in the original. More thoughts here The Lion King (2019) thoughts (*SPOILERS!*)
I tried to give Simba the look of uncertainty as he gazes into the sky, unlike the poker face of 2019 Simba which made it stale and uncanny. But idk if it really worked here.
This was one of my favourite scenes and tracks from the movie, it was absolutely amazing in the original.
I thought this might also double up as a celebration of World Lion Day, August 10th.
Lions (Panthera leo) are the second largest of the cats, exceeded only by the tiger in mean body mass. They are also the most social, often living in prides of related females and a few transitory males, hunting and feeding together. This has allowed them to become apex predators in their ecosystems, hunting prey noticeably larger than themselves.
They are among the most charismatic megafauna, and have long-captivated humans throughout history, as symbols of strength, courage and royalty (as exemplified by this franchise). Although the oldest art of lionlike cats dates to at most ~40kya, I don't doubt that ever since our species emerged over ~300kya, we have always had a healthy respect for this majestic predator, which back then may have been even larger than today.
Only a few millennia prior, many branches of the lion family tree existed. Like us, their origins lie in the savannahs of Africa, but they migrated out multiple times, giving rise to populations such as the great cave and American lions of the Holarctic, as well as more familiar extant varieties. Today, only one species of lion survives, occupying a fraction of its former range. They serve as reminders of a time when large carnivores prevailed on multiple continents until virtually yesterday, after which they were mysteriously extirpated alongside countless other animals. Why they died out is hotly debated, but this doubtless makes our remaining lion populations all the more precious.
Today, the activities of man pose a huge threat to these cats, as their habitat is destroyed in favour of farms and settlements, and they are killed for their hides or as vermin. And yet, there we have seem some progress made thus far - lions have been found to still inhabit regions where they were previously thought extinct, such as Gabon. The small Asiatic population are growing, being respected and revered by the locals, albeit they are in need of some breathing room.
The future is still uncertain for this cat. Let's hope that these hunters of the ancient world survive in this age of man.
Happy World Lion Day!
