Description
     ^^^Part 2^^^                ^^^Part 3^^^

The first part of a new project I'm working on called The Rise and Fall of the Martian Empire. This map deals with the initial unification of Mars (or rather, reunification) and the very beginnings of the First Martian Empire. I didn't get as many details as I would have liked onto the map, but I felt that it was best not to clutter it up with things that wouldn't really be relevant in later parts of the project. I have no real details regarding the events depicted on the map, just a vague idea of the slow Martian unification. The next part of this project will deal with the unification of the Sol system, the foundation of the First Martian Empire, and the Martian colonization of Earth and Venus.

Do you have a blank of this map?

I just used this one and tweaked it a bit.

Really nice map.

I do like this map, reminds me of textbook maps of the expansions (& destructions) of the Persian, Macedonian, Roman, Chinese and Japanese Empires.
The Great Canal is a nice touch indeed!

Also I did like gatemonger's idea to base the colonization around certain areas, though to complete the parallell, prehaps add one or more nations of exiles from the losing sides of the Martian Expansions, seeking to return to the "Mother Planet" (to parallell Liberia) and some few remaining Earth nations (though not necesserally based on real nations today) for the Martians to conquer ( the "return" of "Orbital Bombardment Diplomacy"?), prehaps with one or two surviving nations(to parallell Ethiopia). Mechas, robots, Earthling proxies and bio-genetic engineering to solve the gravity question?

I was thinking Earthling proxies. Technology is only just beginning to recover by the time of Earth's conquest and although the Martians would have the knowledge of things like advanced robotics and bioengineering they lack the infrastructure and resources to do these things at all, let alone on a large scale. Basically imagine the scenario in reverse: our world in 2005 discovers centuries old spaceships capable of interstellar and intrastellar travel. We can understand a lot of it and have a pretty good grasp of the basic concepts of the things we don't really understand. The ships aren't in great shape after all that time but being left in the vacuum of space has preserved them well enough to study and reverse engineer. We can replicate them, but without a real grasp of how it all works as a whole our ability to use this technology is very limited.

I like gatemonger's ideas too, but I'm trying to incorporate my own ideas first before I go using the suggestions of others (not that they're bad suggestions). One idea I had was to have Martian troops take medicine to increase their blood pressure; the idea being that if the Martian heart isn't strong enough to work well on Earth (death wouldn't be immediate, it would be a slow death over a relatively long period of time during which the heart basically overworks itself to the point of failure) then increasing blood pressure, while dangerous, would buy them some time. I don't know how feasible that idea really is though. Anyways proxies would be the way to go. Earth, being the obvious capital of the Earth Federation, would have been more or less annihilated by orbital bombardment and by the time the Martians are united and drawing their plans against the Earthlings the state of civilization on Earth is grim. It's reverted to a more or less 17th/18th Century level and there are less than five million people worldwide. Building up trust with certain societies and giving them limited access to more advanced technology in order to conquer/defeat their enemies or improve quality of life would be the Martian plan of attack. These nations would swear fealty to the Martian crown and become integrated as colonial dominions of the Empire. The Martians would use their technology to solve any problems the dominions would have in return for goods that Mars itself cannot produce. In particular tropical goods, since Mars is distant enough from the sun to lack a tropical zone entirely. Spices, sugar, vanilla (Martians have an insatiable appetite for vanilla), coffee, tropical fruit (Martians love tamarinds almost as much as they love vanilla), dyes... The list goes on and on. Mars also has a distinct lack of arable land and fresh water, so foodstuffs and drinking water are a big deal too. As for the Liberia idea, I don't really see it happening. As far as the Martians are concerned Mars IS the homeworld. Earth is too big, too climatically diverse, too chaotic and random. Mars is very uniform, in terms of climate, race, and culture, and is supported by a balanced system of industry and agriculture to keep the atmosphere stable since the lack of a strong magnetic field makes holding an atmosphere difficult if it isn't replenished. Earth is uncomfortably natural for them to live on, but profitable enough to meddle with.

I wonder what type of music they listen to, for both the post-conflict war Earth and Mars.

And how do martians look like?

Sorry, my last comment was screwed up because my phone displays the mobile DA site poorly. Music I haven't thought about, but the Martians like grandiose stuff so I imagine it would be impressive, whatever it was. The Martians are fairly racially homogenous, more or less. Most of them have dark skin, ranging from dark brown to dark tan, and have many Asian facial features. Some minorities exist, like the pale skinned, blond haired Gusevics, or the Yla people who have the same dark skin and Asian features of their neighbors but have many with red hair and blue eyes. Martians are slightly taller than Earthlings, but you would probably only notice if you were alone in a crowd of Martians.

Yes, I would be sure to inform viewers otherwise. For stories told from the perspective of people in this universe the Martian calendar will be used, but I will provide conversions.

I'm working on it now. I need to figure out how Martians might divide the planet up and how they will colonize and administrate without having to set foot on the planet since the gravity would be fatal to them.

I love this map! Great concept for the scenario. As for Earth's colonization/partition, I recommend looking at the history of Earth colonization to make the partitioning accurate. First the areas of easiest access to the colonizers (here that would be near space elevators or on the equator) and then the filling in of gaps via treaties like the Berlin Congress to deny said territory to the other powers. Hope this is of some assistance to you.
