Description
Previous tutorial:It's tutorial time!
This month's tutorial was sponsored by , and it revolves around drawing spots and other markings on characters! After 170+ pages of drawing nothing but leopards, you'd think I'd know enough as to be able to give some advice xD
Of course, this doesn't just apply to spots, but to virtually any markings/tattoos painted on the character's skin.

we generally do horses instead of cats and luckily horse spots are just random, but if we ever do zebras in the future then this has some good tips for paying attention to how the stripes flow over the body ( like in the tiger example ). even though horse markings are far different from a cat, this still has some good advice about paying attention to how the markings stretch and squish along with the coat as the animal moves.
I also liked the photo examples for comparison and how they were royalty-free with credit links, and the examples of bad ways of doing it and why they don't work as well. I honestly never noticed cat spots go in any kind of pattern like that and from now on I'll be paying closer attention to other animals with markings that may not be as random as they first appear.
I was hoping for shading/lighting tips on spots/etc when I clicked on it but I see how that would have to be its own separate tutorial and would make this way too long. this was easy to follow and had some humor and personality to it, though kind of got a little TLDR in some places. overall, very nice job.

Thank you so much for this. I do have a cheetah character and while I draw the spots symbolically, just to mark that they're there, this will be a huge help for me when I decide to go into detail with her.

Oh this was so helpful Thank you SO much, this really broke it down into an easy to understand way, I don't draw big cats often enough but this will help so much the next time I do!!

Part I: (step 1 & 2) It's easy!
Part II: (step 3) ...except it's a lot more complicated than that.
Part III: (step 4-end) Here's how it all comes together.
I really like how it's laid out, and it's pretty entertaining to read as well as informative.

I have tons of difficulty getting markings to accept the same shading on the coat, whether putting them on their own layer with some kind of layer setting like overlay, or trying to submit them to the same lighting effects as the rest of it...

uegrbuf THIS WAS SO SMART, I actually never draw the lines of how the fur texture would affect the design! I am literally dumb founded rn

Very welcome!
That's actually pretty accurate! The fur also follows the folding of the skin, so your method isn't too far off

Aw shoot, that would've been useful when I did my cat month T____T
Didn't know spots had an "order" like stripes

Oof sorry xP
From what I could observe, they do! They definitely have more of a randomness factor than stripes do, but they seem to follow along the skin just like stripes

I'll use it for future artworks hehe
Never realized that. Now that you pointed it out, I can see it ^^ (especially on the cheetah)
