Read Africa:
Boy has it been a while since I last posted a reference sheet!
Many of you have been asking for these, but I was always afraid of spamming people with unnecessary info.
Are you guys still interested in seeing reference sheets for the two comics? If you are, get ready, because there's a ton of them! First, I want to update them all though, since many of them are old and not up to par anymore.

Anyway, meet the latest-introduced characters in Africa, Faida the hyena and her trustful follower, Badru.
Have I ever mentioned that I LOVE hyenas? They're cute and terrifying at the same time! Incredibly powerful and cunning animals.
Also, baby hyenas are adorable and are practically mini Tricos. Seriously, look them up.

Random chit-chat aside, here's a few more facts about these two giant puppers!
  • Faida and Badru are roughly the same age (12), but Badru's emaciated look makes him appear much older.
  • Despite being the head male, Badru's rank is still lower than that of any female in the clan.
  • Faida's name comes from Swahili, but it's also a word from my native language, Italian. Interestingly, both translations of the word work very well with her character!
  • Also "Faida" sounds a lot like Fido, only as a girl. Now I can't unhear that.
  • And last but not least, hyenas are not canines! Ugh!

Here you go! I hope you like these two!
Any questions? Feel free to ask them in the comments!

Ahh yes, the masculinity of a female hyena.
Very strange animals. They turn what we think we know about males and females upside-down.
Even more so than seahorses. (They just do a switcheroo)

Ollie-WanKenobi In reply to ShinobuDonatsu [2018-05-25 03:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... I don't recall any canids with a very strong matriarchal social structure.. to be honest, the social structure of lions is more reminiscent of dogs than the spotted hyena's.. and though it's true that hyenas are a little more closely related to cats than to dogs, the relation is still very distant... either way, they are rather unique and weird mammals.
I'm sorry. I'm just a fan of details, if you know what I mean.

MviluUatusun In reply to ShinobuDonatsu [2018-05-25 00:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, from what I've read, hyenas are more closely related to cats than to dogs.

ShinobuDonatsu In reply to MviluUatusun [2018-05-25 12:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I know. That is kind of common knowledge. xD But they look like dogs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MviluUatusun In reply to ShinobuDonatsu [2018-05-26 00:28:37 +0000 UTC]

That they do, especially the spotted hyenas.  If you've ever seen a striped or brown hyena or an aardwolf, they look less like dogs and more like, well, like hyenas.  LOL.

Sanluris [2018-05-24 21:20:15 +0000 UTC]

Hyenas are adorable. And they're actually felines! I was surprised when I found that out but I thought it was pretty cool. More closely related to our little leopard baby there! Hyenas are a lot nicer and more fascinating than people give them credit for.
Isn't it amazing how their natural hierarchy happened to have females as the most powerful? It must have a big evolutionary benefit! I feel bad for the male hyenas though...not sure if the way they are treated has any survival purpose. Might just be a side effect of females being powerful? Males really get beat up and are generally treated badly in hyena groups.

Ollie-WanKenobi In reply to Sanluris [2018-05-25 03:19:59 +0000 UTC]

Though hyenas are a little more closely related to felids than to canids, hyenas are still very distantly related to both. Hyenids are actually most-closely related to civets (if you don't know what those are, look them up) and mongooses like meercats.

MviluUatusun In reply to Sanluris [2018-05-25 00:03:18 +0000 UTC]

Actually, believe it or not, only the spotted hyena is a matriarchal society.  The other three species don't even live in packs and the striped hyenas tend to mate for life.  (I read that when I was researching them for a story I'm writing.)

Sanluris In reply to MviluUatusun [2018-05-25 03:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's pretty neat. I didn't know. I'll have to do some research and find out more.
I did a project in junior high about lemurs and apparently they're matriarchal too. I thought it was cool then but I wondered why. I didn't research anything else beyond that project, but I should have. Never hurts to learn more, and animals are fascinating. I did another junior high project that was 30% or something of my final grade and it was on Africa and places, climates, cultures and animals. One animal I researched was the African wild dog. That's pretty much all I remember from that huge project, haha.

By the way, do they have any offspring?

XUhuruX [2018-05-24 18:53:43 +0000 UTC]

Well in real hyena clans the lowest ranking female is still ranked higher than the highest ranking male so I see where that's coming from.
Nevertheless, I love Faida. ^^

SchabeofDoom [2018-05-24 18:50:42 +0000 UTC]

I so love hyenas! They are my favourite animals of all time. And most people think they are dump cowards. But its the lions stealing from hyenas more often and they are so intelligent they think about if they help someone in their pack, would it benefit them.

Et pour les refs postées dans ta galerie, personnellement je n'y voit pas d'inconvénient...néanmoins gare au spam ! :'D

What's this?...

A DA comic that isn't TLK related that actually has a hyena character portrayed in a non-negative light???

FINALLY!

Alongside Africa and her cubs, Faida became an instant fave the second I saw her lovely, scarred face!

AccursedLore [2018-05-24 18:26:54 +0000 UTC]

Fun fact of the day;

The females can make themselves have 'penises' to avoid being taken advantage of by males. And while this does prevent forced mating it also makes it harder to mate in general. So even if you see a hyena that looks to have an 'erect' penis... Keep in mind that it could actually be a female. xD

Hyenas are weird, I'm just putting it out there.

At least now we know that Faida won't kill the cubs. That's... Actually a relief. >~>;;
