Description
Based on a photograph from a horse magazine I picked up. This took months of work and it took me forever to figure out what to do for a background. Done with mechanical pencil, charcoal pencil, and erasers.Related content

Thank you! They are kinda messy, but no worse than colored pencils anyway. Unless you use the charcoal sticks; those are really messy! It's all good though!

Astonishing horse. You've made great work with those shadings. Only thing which I noticed to be weird was it's neck. But allthose this is really beautiful works. The black is black and other colours are like they suppose to be.

Thank you! Someday, when I feel I've improved more, I'll have to try this picture again. I learned a lot from it.

Hehe, wow. I clicked on this, thinking it was a ref to show how dramatic hilights are on dark horses. xD Insanely awesome, I must say. The off forepastern could use a bit more feathering compared to the others, and maybe a bit more stuff in the front to make it look more real to me...but I haven't met many Freisians. Sad thing, that fact.
Anyways, it's still really awesome. *faves and watches*

Thank you very much! I haven't seen many freisians in person either. A sad thing indeed. I referenced from a photo in a Horse Illustrated magazine. Definitely my best horse piece to date! Hopefully others will continue to improve . . .

beautiful! The cheek is bothering me a bit, but since I just finished getting a 'every animal has BIG CHEEKBONES' lecture from my art teacher, I may just be seeing things where there are no problems.
it's BEAUTIFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
that's a sexy horse.

You're welcome. Yeah, but from my own experience, it takes whatever talent the artist has to turn that photo into a drawing and their own special creation. You did that well.

I love how you created the light upon his dark skin (something what always troubles me with dark colored horses) It's a very dynamic picture.

Thank you! It wasn't terribly hard, I just planned it out beforehand. But I had a photo for reference too, and that made a huge difference for me. I'm not so good at guessing on my own where highlights belong.

Yeah, that's the thing what troubles me always, I love to do the shade on a horse, because I know where they belong, but the high-lights? lol that's a hard guess for me...
Not that often I use a photo as a reference, because then I will copie the photo completly, and then it isn't a drawing for me anymore.

I think it's still drawing. It's all your own work (unless you trace) and it's not usually easy work. I think it's also great to draw without reference, too. Then it's really a test of your knowledge of anatomy and lighting methods.

1Merel1 In reply to Aryenne [2006-06-22 09:51:34 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it still is a drawing with or without a ref, but I'm just more proud on a piece when it's done without it. ^^
I know, almost everything in my gallary is drawn without reference. But on the moment I am working on a fjord with a reference. I do that because it learns me alot about the anatomy. So I learn the details.

Reference has helped me learn a lot about the anatomy, too. My horses improved a fair bit after I drew this piece.

Yeah, that the fun of drawing things, how more often you make somethig, how better it become (especially with refs)

I was rather shocked when I realised that this is a tradional piece of work
Do you know how talented you people are that do tradional work like this
OMG I love Fershians, and you caught that perfect sheen they have. They're the most gorgous creatures on the planet
BTW thanks for the watch aswell

I love freisians too. I have hopes of getting one . . . some day. It was a lot of work and a lot of planning to do with, especially with all the sheen and everything. But it was worth it! I'm glad you like it. And your welcome for the watch. I'm watching you cause I like your art.
