Tried a slightly different feel with this, going with a more realistic render of the character against a "toon" style background.

Much more unified style. With the bg, you kept it simple, realistic yet cartoony. Same as with the female character. Kudos!

After out chat on the last one this seemed to lend itself to working in that style so I thought it was well worth a shot. Had to do a separate render of the character and then composite it all together to get the right look on her, but it came together well I think.
