Thoughts about the Character:

I thought Jan would have been one of the best there was with a sword in hand and because of all her skill she was named the second in command in her battalion, of course there was a lot of jealousy at first, no one in her battalion respected her for they thought she only got there by sleeping with the commander and other stupid reasons they could find to make their prejudice towards Jan grow even stronger. To say it never bothered Jan was a lie but she did her best either way and putted up a strong front so none would notice her true feelings.
The funny thing about all this situation is that, Jan actually had a girlfriend, and before any great battle she would meet her beloved, they would spend the night together and Jan's girlfriend would always use their time together to pray for her safety (I believe Jan's girlfriend would be a mage and would tend to ask Jan to use a magical stone necklace) there meeting would be a secret because Jan believed her brothers in arms would despise her even more, but the truth was so different! When a group of men from her battalion actually found out Jan had a girlfriend (and her girlfriend was so cute too!) it made them actually see Jan in a totally different way! The thing is, people need something to connect with others, they need to feel that the person who commands them have anything in common with them, and the fact that Jan had a girlfriend made the ice melt and all of them started seeing Jan as something other than just a woman. At first, Jan was a little embarrassed that all the battalion knew she had a girlfriend but as she saw how it changed the way they looked at her, and how they began to respect her, she couldn't care less anymore about who knew about it.
Unfortunately, Jan's life wasn't made of easy decisions, they were at war and right before a very important battle their commander just vanished, the battalion agreed that Jan should lead them to battle as she was the Second in Command but as troops engaged battle Jan got separated because she followed an enemy and was captured, but she wasn't captured by the enemy, she was captured by her own commander! He told her that battle was sold, that all their battalion were suppose to die there and the commander was making an exception by saving Jan from the massacre. Jan couldn't believe what she heard and at first she only stood there silently, those people never treated her the best way possible, but in reality she never really cared about getting to know them before! And now, they are beginning to respect her, and they are trying to get along. She wouldn't abandon them even if they treated her badly, so it was clear to her what she needed to do, she spoke her mind to her ex-commander, and he was not very happy to hear it, he told her that if she wanted to get back so much, he would kill her right there and there he began to cut her down, as he finally severed the ropes that was biding Jan, her almost lifeless body fell to the ground, all the strength she had left she used to reach out to her necklace and as she muttered the words "I'm sorry" a very powerful force broke out the necklace, in an instant it killed Jan's ex commander and the two other enemy soldiers that stood guard behind the door then finally it entered Jan's body with great impact, Jan thought she were going to die but when she noticed, she was standing up even stronger than she was before and in the place of her regular sword was an ethereal one made from the life-force of those bastards it killed. Jan understood she wasn't a knight anymore, and in truth, she wasn't really that much alive, she had become a Dark Knight and would need to kill others now to keep herself alive, either way, she ignored all the difficult thought she was having and dashed towards her battalion to finally help them win this hopeless battle.
I believe that as the battle was won, Jan's battalion was hyped up even with all their causalities, but as Jan told the remaining men about what really happened, they knew they could never go back to their kingdom as they were not welcome there anymore (and as proud men, they didn't want to be either! After all, their higher-ups sold them). Also, when Jan told them she was now a Dark Knight and had to kill to stay alive all the men decided to began a mercenary group with Jan as their leader! Jan was not really fond of this idea but nothing could change their minds from it!
