 Sense Vibrations

 Condense Water

Reef allowed himself to exhale the long intake of breath he had been storing. Feeling how the fall of his chest moved the air around it in its own likeness. How his heart beat rhythmically against his ribcage with a constant yet light bursts of vibration. How a single one of his footfalls could ripple throughout the entire glade and beyond outside his metal grasp. It was calm out here. Calm and quiet with nary a bustle of wynglings in ear shot.

Sensing vibrations. While he had never paid much mind to the skill after finding little luck with performing it consistently, Reef had quickly determined that this training was necessary after one particular recent incident at work. As he tended to the books in the back of Miss Alice’s classroom, he had been very suddenly and unexpectedly pushed from behind. It was only accidental as the little quill wyngling had tripped up on their own webbing yet the force was enough to cause Reef’s chin to jolt down into the desk before him with an almighty crack. Yet instead of bouncing back as he would normally and comforting the child who was profusely apologetic about the whole ordeal, his glands flared to life. Glowing a brilliant green as he felt the impact from the hit reverberate throughout the room. But not only that, every pencil tap, every little fidget, every chattering voice. Bouncing and vibrating, overwhelming his senses, until suddenly... nothing. Hands gently placed upon his shoulder, recentring his mind. The glow faded and there she was - Alice. Looking at him with concern. She had told him to rest for the day. To see Dr F. to confirm he hadn’t just gotten a concussion.

And thus here he was. Determined that he would gradually get himself used to the ability and not fall into that same state of overwhelmed fear ever again. He had chosen a familiar stretch of forest to practice in. One that he had walked through ever since he was a small child and even to this day regularly took Trixx to during their evening walks. Though the trees grew taller with each passing year... Though bushes died and new ones sprouted in their place... Though storms and wyngrew left certain areas to only sport stumps... It was always fundamentally the same. The same soft grass that greeted him on the edges of well worn paths. The same chirps, kwahs and skittering of the forest’s life, carried on the faintest of breezes, as it went about barely acknowledging his existence in their presence. The same small hills to scale and dips that filled with water in the rainier months that had been trodden thousands of times over. Yet as he wandered aimlessly - his eyes closed to better attune themselves to the movement of the surrounding area - he picked up on something incredibly small trembling in a nearby bush. Turning his head to align himself with it, he focused on the spot and slowly opened his eyes. There before him was a single watercap... or rather, a waterless watercap. It seemed somewhat distressed as it appeared to be searching the bush for something. It didn’t take Reef long to figure out what that thing was however. The lack of any decent rain recently had really taken its toll on the local fauna and flora and the poor thing must have been searching for a decent droplet to carry and lay its eggs into.

Allowing his magic glands enough time to settle back to normal, he wandered over to the bush. Crouching down and watching the little fuzzy creature for a while. Watercaps had always been one of Reef’s favourite bugs, with their big round eyes and six legs not unlike the commonly kept runeboo. When he was younger, he had always thought it would be cool to have a giant one as a pet, imagining how soft and fluffy it would be to nap with. And while he knew now how childish that sentiment was, he still held a fondness for them close to his heart.

With an incredibly gently exhale, Reef closed his eyes and focused his mind. Instead of the vibrations that he had been picking up on earlier, instead this time he focused solely on the moisture in the air. There was far less of it than he had hoped for yet was he focused on pulling it together, it was just about the right size for the tiny bug. But with the droplet fully formed, now came the true challenge. Placing it in the right spot. Go too fast and he risked potentially bursting the droplet or even drowning the bug. But go too slow and he’d possibly scare the poor thing away. Opening his eyes once again, he began to carefully lower the tiny drop of water onto the bugs equally as tiny head. As nerve-wracking as it was, he managed to keep his cool and let go of it exactly when he wanted to.

The watercap paused for a good long moment as it processed what had just happened. Letting out a pleased little chirp and softly brushing its front legs over its mandibles before skittering deeper into the bush with its newly acquired water. Reef couldn’t help but smile as he watched it disappear. Bidding it a quiet farewell before standing up and looking out toward the rest of the forest. He still had quite a ways to go on his walk and this sense vibrations skill wasn’t going to practice itself. Still, he could at least go home with the knowledge that he helped out someone today... even if that someone was an incredibly tiny bug.
