As Starlight made his way back into the Rattle’s Rest after leaving Kay with Kalypso, he was quickly greeted by a conversation about the up and coming spite hunting classes. It appeared as if quite a number of the pub’s patrons were also enrolled and biding their time as they awaited its beginning, much like him.

Starlight wandered over to the counter and ordered a simple glass of water. He had never been one to drink sap for fear of it clouding his judgement but he decided that he needed some kind of drink as he waited to see if Kay would return anyway, she had to, right? If she had rode in on an ori it should be nearby. Plus there was absolutely no harm in keeping his fluid levels up - a hydrated brain is a healthy brain.

“I shall also be partaking in that class.” He spoke, thinking it might be worth getting to know at least a few of his future classmates. “The more knowledge our town possesses about spites as a collective, the better. Especially with warptide looming over the near horizon.” His gaze wavered slightly at the thought of warptide - everyone who had survived one over the past few years was well aware of the horrors this time of year could bring. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t slightly envy those born recently... those with no knowledge of plague or spites. Yet a larger part of him resented that thought. Ignorance may be bliss but knowledge is one of the strongest tools you can possess and to forgo that knowledge is ultimately weakening yourself and putting everyone at risk.

“Agreed,” One of the part-time staff responded, sliding his water across the table to him. She was a gray biped with a dark patch around her left eye, “There's still a lot we don't know and the fact we have such rare types is intriguing.”
He graciously took the glass of water in his claws, smiling slightly towards her. “Ah, thanking you kindly.” He took a short sip, closing his eyes for a moment before looking back at the crowd and continuing is thought, “Truly... I had always assumed that what we experienced during our warptides was normal throughout all of Ennth, yet it seems as if I was mistaken.”
His ears dipped down slightly, the very thought of his entire world being abnormal to the rest of the country quite frankly scared him. What was so significant about Wynsiph that something unbelievable to the rest of the world would become common place? It was just a small, out of the way farming town with a vast expanse of forest one side and beautiful cliffs the other. He shook his head of the thought, as fun as it was to speculate, it wasn’t healthy to dwell on such questions without answers.
As he was thinking another wyngro approached them, her eyes glistening as she joined in the conversation, “I'm joining the spite hunting class too!” She beamed, “I've always been fascinated with them. I've always heard spite bodies can't be preserved and disappear after a time. I'll see about that for myself now that I'm finally old enough to go take a few down. Convenient timing this class is.”
Starly couldn’t help but be taken a little back by her enthusiasm, gently swirling the water in his glass, recalling the encounter he had with the shamble in the Chant, before taking another sip. “Yes, they do have quite a habit of vanishing after being dealt with.” He paused for a moment, his voice quietened, “...some faster than others.”

“There are some that take longer to 'vanish'...” The grey biped repeated as she wiped down the bar’s countertop, mumbling something afterwards which Starlight didn’t quite catch.
“Yes, I’m afraid. It would be much more comforting for them all to disappear at the same rate... Though, I must admit, it does intrigue me as to where they go once they fully vanish. Perhaps rejoining with the magic of the world to be born anew by the hand of Chii’falla? Perhaps not... I suppose we can never truly know for sure.” He pondered, taking another sip from his glass.

His conversion was cut quickly short by the sound of a fight breaking out. Nothing physical but a verbal lashing of the tongues no less. It seemed as if this spite based topic of discussion had lead to the oh so familiar debate that had driven him away from wanting to spend time in the Rattle’s rest in the first place - the Deelagun attack. On one side there was someone shouting about how it could have been better. How we could have saved so many more lives. How if we had listened then the plague never would have come. On the other someone screaming about how if it hadn’t have been killed then it only would have come back or worse destroyed the entire town.

Starlight found himself simply staring into his now half-drunk glass as he listened to the debate unfold around him. The grief and anguish looming over the crowd is practically palpable. It was too loud... The more they screamed and yelled and cried out, its name filling the air, the more Starlight felt himself slipping away. Without realising it, he had placed a hand on his own back, it was hardly a comfortable-looking position by any means but he was numb to it all. His eyes staring yet sightless.

The sky was red, the screams of agony filled the air, the beast looming over it all from its perch atop the one thing that was mean to save them from such creatures. He was in the air, bow in hand, terrified yet moving. Ivy shouting from the sidelines at the top of her lungs, desperation in her voice as she begged for them to stop.

I stopped... I stopped... Ivy told me and I stopped...

Suddenly, it was hot. Too hot. The sweltering heat of the flames that licked past him, barely missing his left wing as he was forced to fly through its mouth to avoid a stray arrow. Teeth... so many teeth. He had never seen so many teeth in his life and he daren’t ever want to see them again. He felt himself stiffen, his auto-pilot wing flaps becoming less accurate, a sudden flick of its tail.

those teeth... so many teeth... too many teeth...

Pressure. Pressure against his back dragging him away from that world of nightmares. The sound of glass against the table and a concerned voice.
“Hey, it's okay, you're here, not there.”

He could feel himself shaking as he moved to push his back against the pressure in an accepting way. It was going to be ok. It felt like webbing, a wing perhaps? Someone here to help him. He paused in that position for a good moment before closing his eyes and letting out a long shaky sigh. “H-Here... I am... I’m here... safe...”
There was a digging sensation in his back. Claws? His claws... he released his grip on his clothes, partly relieved that they were make of quite a tough material as to where it would not rip.
Opening his eyes again, he looked between his two saviours. A purple biped with giant webbed wings that looked as if someone had stolen the night sky to gift it to her and a brown quad sporting a goatee. “T-Thank you...”

The quad responded by nodding sympathetically and slowly. The biped giving him a soft smile as she spoke, “Don't mention it. I know what that's like. I promise that none of us are ever going to let anything like that happen again. Okay?”
“Y-yes, quite.” Starlight replied, “That’s what the... the classes are for after all.” He gave a soft yet unsteady chuckle as he spoke, trying to make light of the situation.
“Did you want some water?” The quad offered, “Cold water helps me stay grounded when I'm having flashbacks.”
Starly glanced toward the almost empty glass of water he was sipping from, “I-I do suppose I was practically finished with my last one... A fresh glass would be much appreciated... D-don’t worry about paying though... I have more than enough coin on me to cover it.” With that last sentence he produced some coins from his pocket but the quad was already gone.

Softly shifting her wing so that she could sit next to the brown biped, the remaining wyngro addressed him again, “Starlight, that's your name right? I'm Nova! You like runeboos?”
“Yes, um... that is correct. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Nova.” He smiled lightly towards her. “As for runeboos, I do have quite the soft spot for them. My little Espresso back at home does an half boss me around sometimes. Known him since I was only a wyngling stuck in the Nook. Never would have thought a previously wild runeboo could get so fussy.” He laughed, it was a genuine yet soft laugh and wasn’t nearly as shaky as last time, his eyes gained a soft warmth to them. He felt a lot better already.
