Description
again, ancient roma.Day 6, the villa borghese. A giant Art collection of the borghese family, including the possesion of the most impressive works of benini.
Walking through the halls, seeing unbelievable pictures and plastics, beside benini's david, one thing cought my eye.
Benini's sculpture of Apoll and daphne. See the [link] for the original sculpture
Apoll was arguing with Amor, battling, who's the best archer - when he was hit by Amor's arrow. He fell in love with The Nymph Daphne, who didn't want him. blind and full of despair he chased her, hoping to get only one embrace. Sick of this game, Daphne begged her father for help, and he changed her into a cypress. Apoll could just watch, but he still loved her, and will love her forever.
I was captured by teh sight of this sculpture, and used every free minute of the rest of this day for an own interpretation of beninis work...

Good work... the sense of movement is very potent here, and you've done brilliant things with facial and body expressions.

Such a depressing story, but it goes to show just because you persue something does not mean you will always grasp it in the end. People say that if you want it badly enough you will get it, which is total bull shit and it honestly pisses me off when people say that because it allows us to beleive in pointless goals and dreams which mean wasted time, and everyone knows, life is much to short to waste time on silly things.

Wonderful piece of art! I love it so much and in my sight this work in some parts better than beninis sculpture... Another century different vision.
So i just like it better because of the strong and effective lines of the anatomy. It's so impressive and cause in me more thoughts than benini's work itself with its beauty.
Nicely done!

I love the sculpture also...though I have not seen it in "person". This is a wonderful interpritation of it - it's very theatrical and dramatic.

I like how you interpreted the same moment Benini captured in a different, yet powerful way. The movement in this is great, even in the leaves and stuff from the tree. Creative way to transform Daphne, in the sculture the wood is growing over her body, this feels like she really becomes it. Apoll's expression is also more desperate, fits in the situation. And as always, impressive shading!
Benini's work impressed me very much, too. Fav!

thx. That's exactly what I wanted to do. Benini's work is impressive, beautiful, yet so emotionless. I painted the scene in my mind before I saw the picture, and then, it dissapointed me. The sculpture looks much more like two playing kids, running through the autumn leaves. It didn't described this intense feeling the scenery contains, plus it didn't looked to me that daphne is transformed, rather locked into a growing tree...

Nice flow in the composition. The anatomy of the figures is very well done. Fine design.
