Description
These are my Various Attempts to depict the many glorious creations of Emily Rodda in her book series 'Deltora Quest.'As far as I was concerned, the Fear had a shell attached to the rocky wall, making it basically a living fossil, so I designed it with a Nautilus in mind. Octopuses have weird eyes, so this thing has very weird eyes. There's also a sense that it's almost spilling out of it's shell. This thing really let itself go since the days when it would actually have to move in order to eat. Now it's like a deadbeat sitting on a couch next to the kitchen, and someone occasionally tosses a bag on chips through the door.

I'd just read the Shadowlands this year, and reading the description of the Fear, I was thinking that it'd be some kind of ammonite.

Your version is really beautiful. I imagine it completely differently, monstruously ugly For the shell attached to the wall, I imagine it more like a giant clam, with inside the head. And said head, outside of the tiny dead eyes and a beak I imagine to be similar to that of a real cephalopod, it's just this giant mass of puffed up and bloated white flesh... you know something shapeless and really disgusting.

I could have gone for something more off-putting, I guess I was just in the mood for details, and the lumpy abomination is less fun to draw I suppose

Well, given my favorite creatures in the books are the more "lumpy abominations" like Thaegan's children and the Stinger, no wonder I would like to see everything as that.
You still did a very cool and beautiful drawing, though. Makes me think about looking at the second series with a Jules Vernes ambiance
