Originally my first idea for this was that spock beamed down standing up and then fell over. But I really wanted to animate that idea. So instead this cropped up in my sick and twisted mind
And I was too lazy to draw their jumpsuits so instead I just drew them in their usual uniforms.

More than likly, he knew the surface of the planet was unstable and lowered himself so that he would not fall over when he fell...

It's all about strategy, he's going into an unknown environment so he needs to keep his surface area as small as possible to lessen the risk.

In the film Spock kneels down when he beams to Vulcan. And I just had Kirk imagining that he was knealing down so that he'd be in a certain position (i.e. Crotch area) - Crude and lame I know
