New addition for my Season 6 Episode Art!Season 6, Episode 16: The Times They Are a Changeling

This was quite the interesting episode. A subject that might've been too deep to fully cover in one episode, and is rather more suited for a longer strung series of episodes. But it's nice to touch upon the idea of the changelings again. Besides that they showed some more about them as well, what they can change into or not, more specifically.
It's interesting to think about a single changeling being different, and what that means for all the others as well. How different is he, how exceptional is Thorax? Is he a mutation on the changeling, or a more common possibility. Maybe secretly all rocks are changeling all along. What would that mean for Maud and her pet rock?!
But the underlying topic can also be a serious or sensitive one. Being judged for the actions of others. Trying to prove your innocence, instead of being considered so in the first place. Although the ending, everyone did seem a bit cheerful all the sudden. Then again, two princesses and Spike the brave did vouch for him...
Artwise, today, though... I wasn't feeling it, sadface. So I derped more than usual, simplified the scene, and then realised I might've just gone with a different complex rather than simplifying it haha. So I ended up with this little bugger.
Anyhow, hope y'all still enjoy! I haven't been doing that well lately, this might slightly show that, but I hope it's still passable.

Warning: spoilers, sort of but don't read if you haven't seen Times are a changeling and the season 6 finale.
I may not be following the serise anymore but I know for a fact that I freakin' loved Thorax. I just wish there were more episodes dedicated to his character development that showed the process of how sharing love changed him. They could've easily expanded his character but instead the episodes were more focused on characters that had plenty of spotlight. Now to be fair, I haven't watched every episode since Slice of life but the internet tells me Thorax only appeared in those three episodes. I wish they did more in the canon.

The episode was good, but I wish it didn't have that song. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Spike finally got a real solo song, but I didn't like how it was used to solve everything. Instead of singing, he should have explained how he met Thorax and above all, why he trusted him. That would have made a ton more sense. Seriously, nobody even had any questions after the song, they all just suddenly trusted Thorax. Because reasons.
I have a feeling we'll see Thorax again in the season finale. It'll be interesting to see him turn against his own kind. I really don't want Chrysalis and her army to get redeemed, but Thorax is great. He's unique, and I want him to stay that way.

My thoughts on this episode: I think that Thorax is actually Chrysalis disguised as a lesser changeling. This may not make sense initially, but keep in mind that she is a master of deception and manipulation, it wouldn't surprise me to see her thinking outside the box. I think she's going to try and kidnap Flurry Heart to get revenge against Cadence.

I hope that is not the case. It's possible, but I don't think they'd do that. Besides, Chrysalis is a horrible actress. She only acted nice when she was with brainwashed Shining Armor, and Twilight saw through her in a second.

I agree. One gets the sense that the song might have been the last point in a debate that never took place. Disregarding time constraints, Spike could've mentioned that Thorax saved his life twice and restrained himself from harming the baby when given the chance. Thorax would then introduce himself and plead his case. When the royal family considers this with some remaining skepticism, then Spike could answer with this song. It's still a bit idealistic, I know, but this is MLP, not To Kill A Mockingbird.
I'd also like to see Chrysalis stay bad, but her army (aka. her species) might have a chance. A unique Thorax would be interesting but improbable and ultimately tragic.

Exactly. I wouldn't have minded the song at all if it had come after a couple of short sentences where Spike would have explained how he met Thorax, how Thorax saved his life and what Thorax told him about his life and why he left his hive.
I kind of like the idea of Thorax being the only good Changeling. I don't want any more redeemed MLP villains. Soon they'll run out of enemies to fight.

True, nothing keeps things going like a reliable villain. Then again, MLP has been cultivating a world where things develop and change. This precludes eternal villains. They all get redeemed or vanquished. Either way, we run out unless new enemies are introduced or unless the good guys lose (mwahaha).
I'm not sure if good changelings count as redeemed, since they, like Thorax, would be born good. So, bad changelings (most of them) can stay bad. We get to keep our villains while the good guys have to deal with the headache of keeping an open-mind even while they fight.

A few things I think we can take away from that episode:
*Friendship is a highly foreign concept to the Hive. Not that they're incapable of it or don't know what it is, but it took an aberrant to seek it out for themselves rather than steal the love from it from others.
*Thorax believes the others in the Hive can also learn how to have friends. They're likely all intelligent enough to understand the concept, just we weren't shown any Changeling other than Chrysalis talking in the invasion episode.
*They can kinda tend to freak out if they're love-starved and then exposed to a great deal of love, even the more friendly ones. They're overriding base instincts, which come out even stronger when love starved, to just be friendly if they are. So while intelligent, they're still highly instinctual creatures.

So do changelings go through complete metamorphosis? If so, do they have cocoons or chrysalises? The latter would be kind of awkward considering their queen and all.
Am I the only one who thinks the statement that "a changeling can change" is somewhat hampered by the fact that Thorax was apparently born good? In fact, this made him so different from the rest of his species that he had to disown his kind altogether.
In the meantime, I really like Thorax! I know people have issues with his voice and character, but it helps if you keep in mind that he's still relatively young. If his crystal pony form is anything to judge by, he's only a little older than the CMC. He's just a kid!

Personally, I think the message of this episode is very relevant to current events in the world. Seems like there are a lot of our own real life "changelings" that people are debating on whether or not we can trust or not. What I like about the episode is that it points out the fallacy of demonizing a race; there's always going to be at least one that's the exception, and we should always keep that in mind.
Anyway, getting off my soapbox now, nice pic. Though Thorax's expression here strikes me a bit more like disgust than sadness or intimidation. Y'know, a sort of "eww, just what did I step in?" sort of face.

This episode absolutely infuriated me for a handful of reasons, mainly because of the huge security risks that were glossed over, but also because of Thorax himself. But this scene was good.

Thorax's Mother: (looking over the hatchlings crawling around the communal nursery hive) "Huh... okay, right... which one's ours again, honey?"
Thorax's Father: "The egg I wrote 'Thorax' on with black marker."
Thorax's Mother: "The eggs are all broken up now, you moron! Now we can't tell which one our son is!"
Thorax's Father: "Well... it's not My fault! They all look alike!"
(SLAP!)
Thorax's Mother: "RACIST!!!"

What Thorax reminded me was the clone in the latest Star War. See the idea? Also the stone theory... I talked about it in the blog after the episode aired, but I was talking about Tom. Boulder is too small.
Baby creatures are mostly so damn cute. And this one is no exception. Until it HISSS into your face.
