In terms of first day I began on this to finished it took me a bit longer than expected. The hours got a bit stretched across the months. But I think in the end, the result was worth it. Had a massive boost in productivity in this last week, managing to round up all the sketches and concept, then just fly through all the shading and details.
Great scope to work on in a fun way. Had fun designing dragons, for which this was a great excuse haha. (You might've remembered the sudden dragon designs from a while a go, that was mainly because of this piece)
Anywho, hope y'all enjoy the piece, and of course also for those who read are going to read the fanfic tied to it, enjoy the read

Ugh this is fucking stupid. Why spend so much time on a couple of overrated pony-based characters in a dramatic sequence far beyond their maturity level? You could have done so much more on another medium based on the apparent high level of technical skill demonstrated in this and other pieces you've done.

Regarding the opinions in your comment, whether they're overrated or if it's beyond their maturity level, is I guess how you feel. Maybe you can change your mind but I suppose I have no intend to try and make change there. I can say I feel different about it, but that's ok.
Moving on to the rest. To begin with that I enjoy the world of MLP:FIM and I like making art for it, but I also do so in my own ways. Those ways can still be challenging, regardless of which source material I used. Whether it's ponies or any other universe, an artist can try to translate any of it into their own style, it's still a lot of figuring out and challenging. Such as how I treat the shapes, light, poses, and more.
I still mix it up with my own ideas and creations. Even if I use MLP as a reference, there is still a lot of my own techniques, and style involved, and I do thank you for the compliment 
Just because I used MLP doesn't mean I could've done more elsewhere because of that. I can always do more, anywhere. It's a matter of getting there in the first place.
When I work on MLP, you can objectively look at it and say I'm spending time in quadrupeds, or in this case dragons. Something that I think can be worth spending time in.
It's what I chose to make, because I enjoy it in general. Fantasy has plenty of creatures that follow the same lines, so I become more proficient at them as well. It keeps me learning just as much.
For me using the world also keeps things interesting, and has me motivated to spend a lot more time in general. Using existing worlds also allows me to focus on certain aspects more. Instead of having to make a design, I can use an existing one and focus on the painting aspects. (I do still make a lot of other designs myself)
Along comes the social benefit that I can share my fan art of something I enjoy with others that enjoy it as well. Contributing and giving back to a welcoming community.
At the same time it still makes me happy to see when folks can enjoy my stuff because of my style, regardless of it containing ponies or not.
I still personally believe that the source material doesn't matter as much to the artist's quality as much as the artist him/her self. It can of course matter for appealing to different audiences, and as with most things different per person.
Any way, Thank you again for the compliment, and taking your time to voice your words. I hope you're still able to enjoy the technical aspects, and other stuff I have in my gallery.

what is wrong with you???? its none of your business what the artist draws or doesn't draw. if you don't like it don't look at it. and don't post such hateful comments on an artist's work like that!!!! so you don't like MLP but the artist does- cant you just appreciate the beautiful art they've made??? why does it matter what the subject is??? besides this artist spent hours of incredible skill on this piece of art and doesn't deserve a hater and bully like you to dis it like you've done. and you ask why do make this??? its because the artist has a wonderful imagination- something you seem to be lacking greatly.
