Description Started out with the plan of another Nightmare Nights piece. Ended up with regular Luna strolling in the night
Haven't made her in a long time (if you don't count Nightmare Moon) and given the time of the year, I guess I had too revisit her.

These night scenes... at one point I almost made it a day scene because the colours were not working out at first haha.
But I guess in the end it turned out al right. I just have to get used to the different greyscale values and colour combinations
Didn't help that Luna's colours are somewhat interesting to make.
Her hair was fun to play around with though. Something different than usual

Did kinda want to improve those clouds and the environment a bit more but.... heh... I guess I just stopped here hehe

anyhow, Luna

Hey I used this in a video (no monetization) and gave you credit (if you're ok with that):Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYINkd…

(this art was just too beautiful and just perfect for my video so I had to use it)

I have a question.

Do you post speedpaint vids on youtube or anywhere?

I like to watch speedpaint because it's interesting to see a drawing from start to finish and sometimes I learn something watching someone els draw.

Ah yes, I have a collection of time lapse videos on my youtube channel www.youtube.com/user/AssasinMo…
Although I've been a bad monkey at uploading any in the last month, slightly lazy in putting together the recordings hehe.

This is an excellent work - the coloring, texture, composition and mood in general work very well together. There is one flaw that I notice - Luna's anatomy - her front legs.

Β Horse's legs actually emulate our arms, with a shoulder, elbow (which you haveΒ  essentially drawn correctly, the elbow is perhaps a bit low, but these are cartoon horse, so some artistic license is fine) and forearm below the elbow, then a wrist, or as a layman might see it, the knee. (most horse-people actually do call it that, but if we look at it like we were comparing to human anatomy, then we would call it a wrist) which you have either completely omitted, or placed at the fetlock and omitted that. The fetlock (below the knee) and then the pastern (joint above the hoof) are like our fingerbones, and the hoof is actually like our fingertips/toes.

So, long story short, you are missing a joint or two in the front legs, This is super difficult to explain without either a real horse or some pictures, since it goes against a lot of our own logic about how legs work. Here's a tutorial (one of many) on horse/pony legs that will probably help more than my long-winded explanation: pix3m.deviantart.com/art/G4-ML…

I have looked at some of your other MLP pieces and noticed that while a few of them (assasinmonkey.deviantart.com/a… do suffer form the same problem, most do not (assasinmonkey.deviantart.com/a… assasinmonkey.deviantart.com/a… , so you could also simply take your cues from those. Also, your more recent pieces don't look like they have this issue, so you also may have already fixed it.

Nevertheless, you are quite talented and this is really a fairly easy issue to fix. Happy holidays, keep arting!

Kind of reminds me of a challenge I saw some artist do which was, using only blue colours. although I haven't made this specifically for that, it kind of almost ended up being that hehe.

Nice that you stuck with it and made it work in the end. I know working with really low values can easily throw stuff off balance.
Speaking of values, I've never really been one for doing those greyscales before the colour work for a number of reasons.
I've noticed a quirk of mine where my values get thrown way off when I work with them alone.
I need the colours to do proper calls on what fits. Somewhat unfortunate, but also a time saver whenever it works.
There's also the fact that I never found an approach to colouring greyscale which I liked.

Just a quick question, do you take count of how many sittings you do when working on these?
I can't remember the last time I sat many hours working on the same thing in one long stretch.
It's mostly been a big quantity of relatively quick studies for me lately.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AssasinMonkey In reply to Raedrob [2013-11-01 20:49:52 +0000 UTC]

Luna indeed puts up a nice challenge with her colours. It probably helped quite a bit I'm familiar with greyscales. Greyscales do require a somewhat unique approach as you'll have to decipher the darkness value for each colour separately. "Red" as most know it is a lot darker than the average blue as that one is known. Different colours requiring different values. And there's even plenty of ways to get through that!
I still have plenty of room for improvements as this piece showed, for me it took a lot of tries and fails
And like you said, even if one finds and approach, you'd have to be comfortable with it as well.

As for the sittings, it kind of depends per piece. Some take 2 weeks of sittings once a day while this one I think took 3. Because I made this and most others in my gallery primarily during streams they range from 2 hour sittings to 10 hour ones, or even more!
It also kinda depends if it's a big piece or the quick studies. I tend to go with what goes easier at that moment, like getting stuck on a big piece, trying to do something else. For all I know there might be something I discover there that can helpΒ

Raedrob In reply to AssasinMonkey [2013-11-02 15:20:19 +0000 UTC]

Jumping back and forth between pieces is something I really can get behind myself.
There's nothing like getting back to a piece after a while and immediately notice the mistakes
you didn't notice before, due to having stared for too long on the same painting.
It also helps being able to admit it to yourself when something doesn't work out.
For instance, recently I started a piece and got some hours into it.
After a couple of days, however, I started realising it did not have the proper feel I intended.
Instead of painstakingly finishing something I didn't like, I just put it aside and told myself
that whenever I got the time and felt inspired to do so, I'd redo the piece the way I intended.

That's an astoundingly beautiful painting. Those blue tones and the lighting make it wonderfully atmospheric, and Luna's expression fits the mood perfectly with that mixture of grim determination and sorrowful confusion. And her mane and tail... oh, I love those! Ruffled yet still star-strewn.

And you gave her proper hooves, how neat!
