New MLP Episode inspired art for my MLP Season 7 Episode Art collection!Season 7, Episode 16: Campfire Tales
Kinda a short piece, even though there was so much that could be made from the episode hah. I went meh on motivation today.
It was awesome to see all the different cultures. It's fun to see the show take tales, fantasies, or dreams and the likes as an opportunity to visit places that'd otherwise be hard to excuse.
I kinda skimmed over a bunch of details and refinement here, as I mentioned, my motivation wasn't quite there. Perhaps I also didn't work out the concept enough in technicalities/planned out. Then there was the usual deciding on shapes such as the head, and ears, all that stuff. I do notice I tend to try and stick to the show's aesthetics where possible, which mah hold me back at times. Colours, lines,and such.
Anyhow, hope y'all enjoyed!

You say your motivation wasn't high, but I say you did a great job once again.
The episode was better than I expected with all the interesting legends from various pony cultures. A nice surprise for sure. I mean, I knew there were going to be legends, but I thought they'd all be ponified versions of American legends like Paul Bunyan.
The only things I didn't like about the episode were Scootaloo acting ridiculously scared all the time and the fact that they seemed to hint that it had only been a year since Sleepless in Ponyville, even though that is FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE. We've had three winter episodes since then! I guess the new writers made a mistake, but hey, nobody's flawless.

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that there's a unicorn with alicorn hair?
Also new headcanon on her: Mistmane was the beta phase of queen chrysalis. Maybe beauty doesn't come from a limitless source; to make one object beautiful you have to steal beauty from another. It said that Mistmane spent her whole life making things look beautiful, so maybe it took a toll on her appearance until she turned into Chrysalis.
IDK, just a theory. Chrysalis is the only villain that doesn't have an origin story and we don't know that much about her, so there's a lot of room for interpretation.

I've been running with the headcannon for a long time that the wavy hair is a sign, not of being an alicorn, but of great and powerful magic, and the more it is used, the more your hair becomes wispy.
So in the future, both Twilight and Starlight (perhaps even Rainbow Dash, since she channels magic through her hair for sonic rainbooms) will have this kind of hair.
And I'd like to point out that as legends, features like wispy hair that appear later in a pony's life will be in the story itself, and her original name forgotten in favor of "Mistmane" which sounds legendary in and of itself.
Or she just had powerful magic manifesting in her hair from an alicorn ancestor, and she was born with flowing hair.

Maybe it was Celestia before she took over the sun, and they've just changed/forgotten the name after millenia. She looks a little like celestia, with the alicorn body shape and wavy hair. Or Celestia's long-forgotten child. Prince Blueblood is her and luna's 50x-great-nephew, to have a nephew at all you need to have a sibling with a child.
I don't know if you can be born with flowy hair. Flurry heart has three alicorn ancestors, (four if you count twilight) and even though she has powerful magic she didn't have flowy hair.

Actually flurry has only one (two including twilight), Cadence was adopted by Celestia after she became an alicorn (she was originally a pegasus)
Celestia and Luna however, are born alicorns in most media, hence my theory the mane came later in life.
But we know when stripped of magic, they don't have wavy hair (first with luna's regressing to plain, and their hair maintaining color but staying stationary after giving twilight their marks), and with more magic, their manes become the elements (fire and void)
Cadence did have wavy hair only once, when she was using her strongest magic as the alicorn of love. (Perhaps in constantly holding the sun and moon do celestia and luna's manes flow, but twilight didn't because that wasn't her own talent.

So in holding her most powerful spell constantly, the theory that the mane came later and the legend/name changed makes sense. Her most powerful spell is channeling her own life force into others (mostly plants), and life force and magic aren't the same thing in Equestria, allowing her gain stronger magic as she maintains her spell and ages farther.

Take into consideration the age of the pony represented from Rarity's story in the episode, and the fact the fillies knew who Rarity was talking about. Just how old is that unicorn?

I was! She may be very very old and in many stories as a hero of sorts, since the story mentioned by Dash seemed like a different one - "That old unicorn with the flower?"
Much like Odysseus's whole story is a conglomeration of many legends with many morals, so might Mistmane's story be told in many ways with many lessons.
So yeah, she might have gotten her misty mane many years past when she saved her town and moved on, but her name in legend was mistmane, and so a misty mane she has.
