Description
So yea... I actually started and stopped working on this 4 months ago, picked it up today and rounded it up.It was the second to last version from the WIP down below which was the point where I had to idea to scrap all progress made and do a completely new version from scratch. Which I actually started 4 months ago as well! (WIP V2 down below)
But here I am... worked on this for like an hour more and I'm calling it finished haha, I guess a successful resurrection.
I probably had never gotten to remake this piece, so I guess this at least takes my "failure" and make sure it gets seen because the concept is still something I quite like.
ANYHOW, the story. Which is the title.
It's a take on the question where Spike's egg came from, who his biological family is, where they were or are.
Wanted to see if I could answer his question in a way.
There's a deeper story behind it in my mind, but I think the image should tell it.
I really liked that topic, so that's also the reason I really wanted to remake this idea. But I guess it took me 4 months to Not remake it and just finish what I already had.
Anyhow, hope y'all enjoy this little oldy from my collection of unfinished/discontinued works. I might just have to see if I got some more lost things around.
Edit: The response to this has been overwhelming! I can't believe I considered this piece "cancelled" for 4 months...
All the stories I see from y'all, all the imagination, all the inspiration, all what I hoped for, thank you.

WIP v2 (and cancelled version):

This inspired me so much, so I wrote this:
Β Β As the rumbling grew louder, the situation grew very clear. The female dragon looked up the mountain with wide eyes. Her eggs were in danger. There were too many eggs to move, and not enough time to think. She quickly grabbed one egg and started to run, but the horrifying reality set in. The landslide was yards away. Her eggs wouldnβt make it. A tear rolled down her cheek in fear as instinct kicked it. She stood, back facing the mountain, and spread her wings to shield the nest. She let out an ear-piercing roar as thousands of pounds slammed into her back, snapping it. But the effort was for nothing. As she lay on the ground, covered in boulders, her eggs were hit by the rocks one by one. She closed her eyes, ready for her death.
Β Β As the landslide ended, and her time was growing shorter and shorter, the pain finally setting in, she opened her eyes once more and remembered; the egg she grabbed, she was still holding it! Suddenly adrenalin took control. She screamed in pain as she desperately tried to pull her way out of the earth. She had to save her egg. She had to save her egg. If she did nothing else- she had to save her egg!!
Tears flooded from her eyes as her claws dug into the ground and she realized⦠there was no hope. Her muscles loosened as her vision blurred. She looked at the precious egg in her hand and prayed with her last breath.
Do you mind if I upload this to my DA, linking to this picture?

Wow.
I'm truly at a loss for words. This is stupendous. The attention to detail, those deep trenches dug in the ground in her final moments, half buried in the ground. It's like not only is his mom dead, but she didn't even have a chance. She spent her last moments in great pain, afraid and alone. I feel immensely sad just looking at this.
It's just sort of humbling to see even such a great dragon trapped, helpless.
You did a great job with making Spike's eyes very wet with tears, despite the already very wet conditions. The poor little guy must be absolutely crushed.
Your attention to detail in this piece is fantastic. Great artwork should move the viewer, and I certainly feel moved. Thank you for creating and sharing such a memorable, moving piece.

Thank you for sharing these words, it's really fulfilling to hear the impact art can have with how the different elements and details added worked out for the final result. Great to see you picked up on them

What makes it sadder is that it's not just the sight of his mother's skeleton, but also the unhatched eggs of at least two of his siblings.

Right. Why was Spike saved, and not the others? That sort of thing would keep anyone up at night.
Like, my good friend was supposed to be a twin, but her twin was stillborn.

the way i see it, spike's mother was about to be crushed along with the egg, knowing the treaty between dragon and pony(though probably weakened later on) she threw spike's egg towards the boarder, it made it to canterlot, and celestia saw the egg and caught it with her magic and kept it for safe keeping until came twilight's entrance exam

Well that is certainly a creepy image what with the skeleton buried under a landslide and the victim trying to claw its way free. It reminds me of Avatar the Last Airbender when Aang found the remains of Monk Gyatsos.

Oh wow that scene yes! In a way I really liked the story and concept behind the Monks and Aang.
Humbling to see my work making connection to that.

Great story telling with all those different elements like the claw marks and egg shells
Btw, did you base that skull off of a horse's?

Not sure what I did with the skull back then, but I think it certainly went in equine direction.

I don't think you need to be an MLP fan to appreciate this piece. For me it brings back memories of seeing The Land Before Time as a child.
