So yea... I actually started and stopped working on this 4 months ago, picked it up today and rounded it up.It was the second to last version from the WIP down below which was the point where I had to idea to scrap all progress made and do a completely new version from scratch. Which I actually started 4 months ago as well! (WIP V2 down below)
But here I am... worked on this for like an hour more and I'm calling it finished haha, I guess a successful resurrection.
I probably had never gotten to remake this piece, so I guess this at least takes my "failure" and make sure it gets seen because the concept is still something I quite like.
ANYHOW, the story. Which is the title.
It's a take on the question where Spike's egg came from, who his biological family is, where they were or are.
Wanted to see if I could answer his question in a way.
There's a deeper story behind it in my mind, but I think the image should tell it.
I really liked that topic, so that's also the reason I really wanted to remake this idea. But I guess it took me 4 months to Not remake it and just finish what I already had.
Anyhow, hope y'all enjoy this little oldy from my collection of unfinished/discontinued works. I might just have to see if I got some more lost things around.
Edit: The response to this has been overwhelming! I can't believe I considered this piece "cancelled" for 4 months...

Very beautiful and sad,love the detail of the bone and the right hand who show the pain with the finger who scrape the ground,also like the size of Spike compare to his mother or father? The rock look good for me. the idea is simple but effective. your picture is good,beautiful and sad,when we see it,that make us want to see a sequel with Spike who go in the castle of canterlot and go speake to CΓ©lestia of what he saw in the mountains and why she doesn't tell anything to Spike. Please excuse me but it's my first critique and I will try my best. What really caught my attention was the coloring and the tilted birds eye view of the painting. The difficulty of drawing a scene in such a position is impressive and adds "depth" to your painting. I love the eggs surrounding spike and how they match his egg before he was born. It begs the question/ if spikes parent had survived would he have siblings? The dragons bones seem to show how the creature may have struggled to escape its demise. This painting holds quite the story.

A sad and somber reminder that most of the likely answers to the question "where did Spike's egg come from?" aren't happy ones.

I have been looking for this masterpiece for months. And it still looks as fantastic as I remember. I considered adapting the image into a FIMfiction for a time, and I doubt I ever could now with all the work I do. This piece actually hits me very hard, Spike sitting there in misery is one part that hits me where it hurts, but also those claw marks in the ground. This dragon was in agony just before it died to have clenched her claw like that. It's an amazing heart wrenching piece of work and I love it.Β

I watched youtu.be/h83OreG13to recently and then noticed when I looked at this post, that there's a little Spike in it now! I did a double take and checked the video, and sure enough, NO SPIKE. So THEN I looked at the WIP for this piece, and he's there in all of the progress shots!?
Did you travel back in time and retroactively add spike to this picture?

You have NO idea how long I have been waiting for something like this.
About a month or so ago, drawponies did a poll journal asking what holidays fans wanted to see portrayed in season 5. I came up with a Mothers Day story about Spikes origins, as told to him by Princess Celestia. This...is uncannily close to part of the story I came up with. I may go back and edit that story to fit this.Β

I find the claw mark a bit un-realistic because it would have been filled with flying ground and dust unless and also possibly it is hard ground and deep enough

Duuude, when I see this picture, I see a very strong story that its telling me. A dragon reaching out to its eggs, trying its very hardest to claw its way out of the mountain rubble, but its efforts are futile. As the soon to be parent continues to struggle, it wonders what will become of its child as it notices that 2 of the 3 eggs are damaged and cracked. In its dying breaths, a lone white Alicorn walks to the downed dragon and the lonely egg. Not knowing what the observing Ailcorn will do to the egg, the dragonβs heart races as it continues to struggle to reach its unborn child. As it continues to struggle, the dragon hears a calm and soothing voice tell it βDonβt worry I will keep your egg safe β. The dragon soon realizes that those words came from the Alicorn, the dragon looks intoΒ the strangersΒ eyes and sees that the Alicorn feels sympathy for the broken dragon and that she will keep its egg safe from harm. The dragonβs heart rests as it knows that its child will live on. As the dragon takes it final breath, a single tear falls from the Alicorns face as she saw a future parent die in front of her. As a few more tears fall from her face asΒ she looks at the egg and levitates it to her chest. As she wraps her front leg around the egg,a few more tears fall from face as she nuzzles her nose on egg and smiles saying to the egg βdonβt worry little one, Iβll keep you safeβ. I kept it a bit open to the viewer whether it's the mother or father. I don't know how dragon society generally acts towards taking care of the eggs. Just the mother, father, or maybe both.

...Um, wow. The more I stumble across your artwork, the more it seems we share a mystical headcanon bond. Or something. If it turns out that skeletal dragon was named "Glaurag," my brain might explode.
Trippy. And that... I want to see this scene from multiple alternate perspectives. The abandoned version of this piece is what I would have gone with, but exposing a little more of the skeleton, and changing the angle really amped it up a notch.

I mean - don't get me wrong; the picture is so incredibly well-done in its detail.
But...It's implying that the bones are the skeleton of Spike's Mother. I'm a grown man, and my own mother just died recently - and I was barely able to handle it. So...Imagine what Spike must realize when he sees this. Sure he didn't know his biological mother, but this has got to be some psychologically scarring material here.
