Description
First there is two historical "Francisca" throwing axes and one traditional Anglo-Saxon "Skeggox" what they use in hand-to-hand combat and also as throwing weapon. Those fantasy style steel weapons in the bottom picture are just my own thrower designs. I take some ideas from indian tomahawks, medieval "Hurlbats" and African throwing weapons and mixed them together with my own concepts. (All those objects weight about 600-1000 g.)

Axes were about 700-750 grams each. Thanks for the offer, but I don't really make any business to outside Finland.
I don't usually sell any weapon related objects even in here. They are more like personal hobby and most on my commercial metal works are candle holders, door knockers and other "more normal" things like that.

Yeah I love "Large axes" but I don't see to many taking them on as projects 'having the right tools is a bit more involved'

A coupl o axes would do just fine, not very concealable though

I don't need to conceal them, because I use throwing weapons mostly in my own yard.

Pieces from that bottom picture are my own designs and they have no any kind of names. One in the middle is close to medieval hurlbat or spiked tomahawk, but rest of them are not very close to any real throwing weapon styles what I have seen..

I'm sorry. I should have asked a more definite question. What do YOU call it? If it's a design of your own then you should have a name of it's own, yes?

Ok. But there is no need for exotic makeshift names, because "throwing weapon" is already so describable term.

Maybe, but I just wanted to make something what I can throw in places where are a lot of tree branches hanging etc. (That clean shape go thru the foliage quite easily, because it have not anykind of side spikes like those other things.)
It's nice to have when i try to hit for example in some wasp nest in a tree or inside the haybarn tin roof etc. Bladed throwing weapons are not very good for that kind of purposes, because they can get stuck on the tree, but that thing fall of almost every time. Original idea came from wooden throwing maces what some african tribal hunters use for hunting birds and monkeys in a tree.
Thanks for adding these and that one other set to your favourites.

If you want weapon which doesn't stuck in target rope dart or meteor hummer is also a good idea !

Astalo In reply to Lord-Rzeznik [2012-05-08 21:06:08 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. I have been thinking about making meteor hammer or some bola type weapons in few times, because I have one small bucket of 20-30 mm diameter ball bearings laying in my workshop. (And few larger steel balls also from old stone crusher mill.)
Just need to weld small steel rings to them and add some rope or chains etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Astalo In reply to punkroc [2011-04-21 20:41:12 +0000 UTC]
It's made from forged steel spikes what I attached to old water pipe with arc welder. After that i just filed the welding seams very smooth and heated it again for giving it nice dark finish. (It's kind like my own fantasy version from those African throwing blades. [link] )

You don't need so big places for starting this hobby.
For example I started to collect tools and making first working places in my teen years over ten years ago. First I had only one small room in our barnhouse back in the late nineties and there was only simple working table, drill press and some hand tools. [link]
Now I use whole bottom floor of that building and also the old garage in the other end of my house. I have also big machines in nowadays and that old metal working hobby has turned almost my full time job. (I have to make also some farm- and forestworks about two days in every week..)

It's like an steel version on those simple wooden throwing clubs/sticks what native people use for hunting birds and small game. (Very typical weapon for example in Africa and Australia etc.) Also that far left one is just my own version from african throwing weapons..

Oikein hienoja! Itse teen varsijousia, linkoja ja muita vanhoja aseita... Toivoisin vain että minulla olisi ahjo! Paras saavutukseni on metalliraaminen ballista tähän mennessä.

Kiitoksia kehuista.
Heh.. No on minullakin harrastekäytössä yksi vanhasta laskettelusauvasta pikaisesti kyhätty sauvalinko (Tavallista en osaisi varmasti edes käyttää..
Mulla on jo jemmassa muutama auton vanha lehtijousi, mistä voisi luultavasti muokata osia semmoiseen.

PenUser In reply to Astalo [2009-02-16 13:35:24 +0000 UTC]

Ok. no pitää kokeilla joskus tavallistakin linkoa.

"Tikat" painavat suunnilleen 200 grammaa. Sauvalingolla voi heittää varmaan melko paljon helpommin niitä...

Cool..

fantastic work as usual, have you got a practice range in you workshop to throw stuff at to test them out ?
also how about a step by step making of, an axe head for example, i am fascinated by hot metal work but lack the space and time to actually try it for myself.

I made one target from thick plywood in few years ago when i was throwing only shurikens, knifes and other small stuff. It's located on the outside wall of our farm machine shed.
When i made these a lot of heavier objects i have to make also a little bit stronger target and i mount one 15 cm thick disc from huge bruce trunk in the center of my old plywood piece. (I post soon more pictures from that in here..)
I'm not very good for explaining mechanical details in english, but there is few useful links if you want to forge traditional style axeheads.
