Description I will keep updating this file. woohoo!
I also have Charon ---> fav.me/d91fyqf
You can use this map and share however you like.
Just remember, this was made with NASA/JPL/New horizons data. in case you live under a copyright rock.

CELESTIA USERS:
If you want Pluto to be facing Charon the correct way, you must change the position of the map on the horizontal position.
Simply open a paint program of your choice, then copy and paste the map so that the heart is split by the two right and left sides of the
rectangle map, instead of the center. the heart should be facing away from Charon so it never sees it. No love for Charon! (i only have it offset wrong here, so that the HD tiles are in the center and easy to see, plus it is easier to update this way) its a ruff fix but it works, Charon is fine by the looks of things, don't worry about Charon.

##########################
UPDATE (July 20 2015)

and added better HD globe better then the last! graphics8.nytimes.com/newsgrap…

Now time to update Charon with 1 new tile!
##########################

UPDATE (July 25 2015)

pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Sc…
and two top side corner tiles from here pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Sc… any other tiles i will be waiting for pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc… to update with raw tiles. my hand hurts now from doing all these tiles! lol enjoy~
##########################

UPDATE (Sept 16 2015)
added new HD global image to Pluto and adjusted colours. i have 1 more tile to put on but i'm to tired for today
tile is planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/ass… and re-aligned other HD tiles to it. i dont know if i will make the image any bigger in resolution. its already huge and takes a long time to work with on my computer its so big. enjoy!
##########################

UPDATE (Sept 26 2015)
Added this amazing image to rest of Pluto globe and lots of colour fixing. www.nasa.gov/sites/default/fil…

I still haven't gotten to aligning the sides yet sadly, though i did update the map with latest HD tiles!

yep! its not too too hard but i can understand why you would think it would be complicated, its just a bunch of aligning things once you get down to it though lol.
and hey your stuff is not to bad, you just got to slowly work in some details you have potential. it is indeed tricky to get a good atmosphere effect for a planet ive only done it once here fav.me/d8qmc7x you got to use Blender's Cycles render engine and i believe it is a material that is named volumetric or something i cant remember. I like the animals you made. and its good to meet you too

that is really good to hear! = D

Wow, that's nice! 8192 px! I noticed the detailed area in the heart right away.

Well that makes sense now if you have accurate enough information to align it with. The "eyeballing it" thing never appealed to me and makes me nervous, as I'm a complete nut for accuracy, lol.
That is a great looking atmosphere! I've used Blender for about six years, and I know most of it pretty well, especially Cycles material nodes and such. I'm just wondering about specific techniques for getting it to look right. Getting it to fade into space on he edges, getting a sunset color in the sides, etc... Actually I still have it in my stash here , donno why I haven't uploaded it to my gallery yet...

This whole Pluto thing got me back on my astronomy kick again. Right now I'm playing with making my own solar system in Celestia, which is something I did once before, but it's been awhile. Fun, fun, fun! XD

Yeah its huge = s it was the size the tile resolution fit in the smallest so i had to use it. hopefully it does not get to much bigger.
Eyeballing it is working for me so far after playing around with it its not to hard to find where the HD parts fit over the low resolution ones. i wish i could be perfectly accurate but sadly i don't have all NASAs spacecraft angles and stuff, even if i did, i wouldn't know what to do with it lol

thanks! you've used blender more then i have, i still have a lot to learn in it. and i know what you mean with the atmospheres, the best i could do is make lots of different layers and differing densities to give the illusion of the edge of space. But i have no idea how to do the orange affect. you will have to let me know if you find out how!

Also, I would love to see your solar systems in Celestia! i have been making solar systems in Celestia since 2005. I just recently got a new program named Space Engine that is so much better but works in much the same way. Its to bad Celestia development died, its showing its age. : /

I think 8192 px would be a good size for a close up animation shot.
Yeah, I wouldn't understand any of NASAs calculation stuff either. XD

The closest thing I know of is the technique I used to get the night city lights to fade into the daytime side, using a UV Project modifier connected to a gradient texture node. ([Link] ) You could use the same thing to color the atmosphere orange around the edges. Though I'd rather use something more based on the extent the light travels through the edges of the atmosphere, more like the way it works in reality. But, it'd still work...

I may show it off once I finish messing with it. I know, I'm bummed out with Celesta not being updated sense 2011 (which was before I even started using it), especially considering all the exo-planet discoveries there's been since then. And I'm not completely sure I wanna use some of the addons that people provide for that on CelestiaMotherlode.net either.
I think I might of heard of Space Engine before, but never looked into it. If you can add your own systems and other stuff like in Celestia, I might try it! Hopefully it would render better on my machine then Celestia does, as things like the specularity and ring shadows don't show up form me.

I updated the description for Celestia users so you can fix the way Pluto is pointing in Celestia now.
lol

hmm that's a very interesting way to do it =o ive never thought about it. i guess it is a suitable fix for now. I'm sure someone has written code for a proper atmosphere in blender somewhere?

Making solar system catalog scripts for Space Engine is nearly exact as Celestia, so its an easy transition. its just way better! lol some buttons are the same too like JKL for time.
ever since i switched to space engine i never go back to Celestia. Though Space Engine has very beautiful resource intensive graphics, with 3D surfaces ring shadows and all. but hopefully its not too bad for you. i highly recommend it, the good news is its still being actively updated, and free.

Oh, great! So just switch it right down the exact center of the map then, huh?

yeah, it would be a temp fix...
Someone might have. I should look again. I kinda hope there'd be a way to get it with the right mix of nodes, but a code specifically for it would probably be better anyway.

That's what I want to hear! And of course, I've gotta have the same buttons for time travel.
I will try it for sure. And as long as all the stars and planets are kept up to date, I'm all in!

Pretty much, its really easy to just move it over. All i did was reference one of the approach photos of Pluto and Charon in the same view and figured that out. I figured it would be more complicated but nope. i believe it was this one i used pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc…

Neat how things just work out sometimes. I situated Pluto in Celestia to match the image just to see, (as I already shifted the map) and it does match practically perfect!

I was looking for some reference to make a globe of Pluto. This fit the bill!
I converted to from equirectangular to 24 globe segments.

That is beautiful! I love what you've done with the map! = D I bet its really nice to have! will you make a labeled one with land feature names too?

kboulger In reply to Astra-Planetshine [2015-07-16 14:59:10 +0000 UTC]

As soon as they decide on the names.

One last question. How did you make the globe segments? what program? Someone is asking me just that same question on twitter, twitter.com/Astro_Zach/status/… and i know you are one to ask for help. thanks!
