Description
I will keep updating this file. woohoo!I also have Charon ---> fav.me/d91fyqf
You can use this map and share however you like.
Just remember, this was made with NASA/JPL/New horizons data. in case you live under a copyright rock.
CELESTIA USERS:
If you want Pluto to be facing Charon the correct way, you must change the position of the map on the horizontal position.
Simply open a paint program of your choice, then copy and paste the map so that the heart is split by the two right and left sides of the rectangle map, instead of the center. the heart should be facing away from Charon so it never sees it. No love for Charon! (i only have it offset wrong here, so that the HD tiles are in the center and easy to see, plus it is easier to update this way) its a ruff fix but it works, Charon is fine by the looks of things, don't worry about Charon.
##########################
UPDATE (July 20 2015)
added the new HD tiles to the Heart shaped area on Pluto, did my best to blend them in with colours. download for full size. enjoy!
##########################
UPDATE (July 21 2015)
Added another new HD tile to the left side of the Heart shaped area on Pluto, fits well to me! such a strange world.
the tile is from here pbs.twimg.com/media/CKdr0GgUsA…
##########################
UPDATE (July 24 2015)
Added more new HD tiles to the TOP of the Heart today. more strange Pluto gets stranger!
tiles i added:
pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc…
pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc…
graphics8.nytimes.com/newsgrap…
and added better HD globe better then the last! graphics8.nytimes.com/newsgrap…
Now time to update Charon with 1 new tile!
##########################
UPDATE (July 25 2015)
Just a slight colour and tile adjustment. The contrast is a bit high i think but I'm going to work with that for now its nothing i cant fix later.
##########################
UPDATE (Sept 10 2015)
Added 4 new tiles on the sides of the heart shape! enjoy!
tiles are
pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Sc…
pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Sc…
and two top side corner tiles from here pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Sc… any other tiles i will be waiting for pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc… to update with raw tiles. my hand hurts now from doing all these tiles! lol enjoy~
##########################
UPDATE (Sept 16 2015)
added new HD global image to Pluto and adjusted colours. i have 1 more tile to put on but i'm to tired for today
tile is planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/ass… and re-aligned other HD tiles to it. i dont know if i will make the image any bigger in resolution. its already huge and takes a long time to work with on my computer its so big. enjoy!
##########################

Nearly four years ago, I wrote a little script that would take a map like this and convert it into a kit to make an origami globe. Of course, at that point, the New Horizons mission was a little more than halfway to Pluto so the best maps I had to work with at that point were fuzzy Hubble blobs. I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Pluto data so that I could run it through my scripts and get a not-fuzzy-blob version of Pluto. Recently I had a catastrophic computer failure that resulted in the loss of most of my previously generated kits so recently I started collecting new map graphics. So far, this is the best map of Pluto that I've come across and I would love to have your permission to run it through my scripts.

Nothing yet i dont think. ive tried to enhance the back lit pictures of Pluto, i get some odd white blobs on Pluto but they are no where near the unseen sides anyway, its also hard to tell if they are just ghosts from the camera light too. i might just wait for ofisal announcements about that to be sure.

I commented awhile back (Jul 15) about a globe I made based on your image. That same globe was given to and is now featured prominently at the Lowell Observatory (www.pinterest.com/pin/44691196… ). It has caught the attention of the editor of the online International Planetary Cartography Database (planetcarto.wordpress.com/proj… ). Since it was the one of the first globes of Pluto produced, he wants to add it and its source image to their online database. Are you game for this? My mail is kboulger at aol.

If you e mail me I will forward to you my e mail exchange with the editor. That would probably be the best way to convey what he wants. Their database is currently offline, but I have used it in the past to study historical globes and maps of planetary systems. They are apparently interested in adding the newly created maps and globes of the Pluto system to their list. You have compiled the best images I've seen so far of Pluto and Charon and deserve some mention.

I made a 'midres' version scaled to a quarter of the size, but I kept the full size for the 'hires', and Celestia crashed when I tried it. So I still scaled the 'hires' to half the size.
I was wondering, would it be possible to see a version of this without the missing data in the south filled in? In case we want to fill in our own fictional data. OR to fill it in with procedural data in Space Engine when I learn how. =D
Thank you again for putting so much work into this!

lol its sure a HUGE map.
Without the missing data, what do you mean? Its all blank down there i didn't add anything there. do you mean transparency? it shouldn't be that hard for you to do that, just got to erase the empty bits and fade them out, that's what i would do lol.
Just remember though, that it is still possible that New Horizons can get some moon lit photos of the southern poles and i will be adding them in if and when they do.
And its no problem! I try to update whenever there are new tiles lol

Sorry, the parts without photo data is what I meant. Yeah, it wouldn't be hard for me to erase it, but like I said, I'm an accuracy nut. Guess I failed to realize we still might get photos of that side later though. So never mind in that case.
Thanks.

This is absolutely great!! Did a Google search for "pluto map", though I really didn't expect to find that someone actually made one already. Especially one this nice!
I was thinking of adding the map to the model of Pluto in Celestia for myself. Probably Charon too.
And I look forward to updates on this too! Thank you for putting the work into this!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Astra-Planetshine In reply to John-AM [2015-07-16 06:01:19 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Go ahead adding it to Pluto in Celestia! i did the same too, but just putting them right into Celestia they are not aligned properly with the proper faces of Pluto pointing toward Charon. It wouldn't be hard to fix, i just have the sides that new horizons flew past in the middle so people can see it.
And no kidding! i figured i better send these out for people to use, because i know how slow space agencies are at letting their maps go public. lol, considering i still haven't seen any good HD models or maps for 67P to download for the public from ESA yet. (and i know they have them! www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBltmJ… )
and no problem at all. I might be slow updating with the very high resolution tiles for Pluto and Charon. But i will at least try. who knows, if nasa beats me to the cake then i guess my work is done.

I have ability to edit images (using GIMP), I could just shift the image over, if you could tell me just how many pixels over it should be. Or would you suggest another way of aligning it? Now I just have to remember exactly how to script the maps in. Will have to find some references to help me remember again.
Yeah, good maps are hard to find. I hope to see them come out elevation maps for Pluto too.
Speaking of which, I have always been curious, how exactly do you go abut making this kind of map? That is, what programs are used, and how exactly do you make sure all the images used are lined up correctly? The only maps I know how to make is me own fictional ones. XD
And thank you for the Llama!

Astra-Planetshine In reply to John-AM [2015-07-16 20:45:41 +0000 UTC]
I can only approximate the faces, i just need to look at the raw photos and see what features are facing each other. Ill figure that out later though as i will be away for 1-3 days very soon sadly.
good question, i need to make tutorials on this stuff sometime. : s
I use a free 3D modeling program named Blender3D for projecting the new horizons photos onto a sphere using the proper angle i need, after that i unwrap that sphere into a cylindrical map from the pictures, then whatever unwrapped chunk i get, i then add it and fade it into the other parts of the map i already have in GIMP. it can be a bit tricky to get the angles right if you don't know where the north and south poles are. I got lucky, a lot of the nasa pictures had north right up and even a globe sometimes with grid to show. if not, i just have to eyeball it and try to figure out in Celestia where Pluto was on that time and stuff. : s
Blender 3D is also very handy for painting your own textures too, because you can just paint on a sphere in the program, and when you finally unwrap it to cylindrical maps the poles look right instead of being all stretched and distorted. that's what i used to make this planet. fav.me/d9128fa
and no problem!

John-AM In reply to Astra-Planetshine [2015-07-16 21:14:34 +0000 UTC]
Ah ok, I see. take your time then.
*Gasps* You used Blender for this!?? That's cool! I guess I imagined there would be something much more technical you would have to use for some reason. I'm a Blender user too, and love it, though sadly I haven't yet uploaded much to show for it. [Link] I have made a few random planet map stuff in Blender, including a detailed realistic earth model I had been trying to work on. I've had a hard time trying to simulate a volumectric atmosphere.
Good to meet a fellow Blender user!
Edit: Thanks! I got both maps for Pluto and Cheron in Celestia as an alternate surface, and they look beautiful!
