Description

Snow a completely new and unknown substance to Shale. When she wakes up and looks outside, Shale isn't sure how she'll feel when stepping in the strange white fluffy texture covering the ground. Trying to guess just what she feels it beneath her paws. Will it be relaxing like the river? Will it make her feel sick like moss does? Her hesitation doesn't last long. Curiosity and intrigue take over as she watches the other cubs dive right in. The little cub puts one foot in the snow and the sudden cold washes over her but it's so soft under foot. A sudden and uncontrolled giggle erupts from her mouth. Her heart suddenly felt like it was soaring. Light and full of uncontrollable giggles Shale bounds out into the snowy camp. Taking a few rolls in the fluffy powder. Effectively dusting herself in it. By now the other cubs have stopped to stare but Shale is completely unaware. Nose diving into a pile of it and scooping the snow up into a pile over her face. Curling her paws into and laughing. Joy alight in her eyes, while the giggles continued to bubble up in her throat. She couldn't seem to stop, though she managed to slow down a little and catch her breath as she flexed her paws in the soft snow. She had never felt something like this before. She'd felt all sorts of things from the texture of the ground and plants but nothing had caused this sort of deep emotional reaction in her. The unusual combination of cold and a soft but crunchy texture brought forward a strong emotional reaction from the cub. Shale blinked up, little embers of sunset orange flickering across her gaze as her friend Chickadee spoke to her. Chickadee who was smiling bemusedly down at his friend, but with a touch of amusement. Other cubs were watching her with plain confusion. Unable to understand just the way this felt to Shale. That it wasn't a choice for her. The emotions she felt from textures were as involuntary as they could be. But, to Shale it was her normal. That was how she felt her emotions. Through touch and textures. Some cats felt there emotions through their hearts, Shale feels hers through her paws.

So, for anyone curious. A part of Shales character that I have recently been able to look more in depth at is that she is a Synesthete. This means that she has one or more types of Synesthesia, which is where one sense crossed over or bleeds into another. Senses such as sight, hearing, touch, and taste bleed into each other to create an unusual combinations of those senses.

Specifically Shale has tactile-emotional synesthesia, feeling emotion through touch/texture. And, Chromesthesia, where she sees colors in sound (Voices, Music, natural environmental noise).

So, I wanted to start investigating just how I could apply this in her character in pictures and writing. Here would be my first attempt at working with her tactile-emotional synesthesia (Could use a bit of work but there aren't many examples out there on how people actually describe it when it happens.). She doesn't feel emotions like everyone else does. Her emotions come from the things she touches and in this case there's a new texture for her to investigate. Snow brings her an intense and uncontrollable feeling of joy and giggle fits. Just like described above.

This is a part of Shale I am very excited to learn about and investigate.
