wow
I was always charmed with splendid shots of distant galaxies, couldn't even imagine we have such a beauty right above our heads Usually all I'm able to see is a pale unclear light of it...

'upper' horizon looks like a volcanic eruption

Unfortunately one need very good skies to see and photograph the Milky Way in it's full splendor. And Chile, almost 20 000km away from my home, is a perfect place for that! I'll move there soon, I hope!

Yes, that's true!! The farest distance to any civilization is the best for such shots!

No, I haven't submitted the image yet to the astro mags, but I will do that soon, I think Thank you for your appreciation!

I don't think that I have ever seen this view of the Milky Way. (A quick Google Image search confirms this) Have you submitted this to any of the astro mags ([link] )? The inclusion of the two horizons makes this absolutely mind blowing. The fact that we are at 90o to the galaxy really strikes home

Ah, sorry for the slight delay in answering So, I did not submit it yet to any of the astro mags, but it is a good idea indeed. I will do that, thanks

Thanks! It was a lot of work as I was also observing on the Yale Telescope and I had to run from the control room to the frozen ground outside but it was definitely worth it!

Thank you! I'm happy to live in such a nice galaxy. M 89 is in a very bad neighborhood!

M 89? im sorry, i dont quite understand. but yes, amazing.

astrofireball In reply to StarvingArtist313 [2010-06-27 21:54:02 +0000 UTC]

M 89 is a quite violent galaxy, therefore not very friendly to our type of life. We are quite lucky to be at the periphery of our own galaxy because closer to the center it's quite dangerous....

So you went to Chile?!
I dream about going there, to see the VLT (Very Large Telescope).

astrofireball In reply to Tourdumondiste [2010-01-08 09:35:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I went there... It was a dream of mine also to see that beautiful country and those observatories... and it came true, except for the VLT. Next time, for sure!

Tourdumondiste In reply to astrofireball [2010-01-31 15:29:21 +0000 UTC]

I do appoloise for the late responce there.
So how did you organise your trip, I mean, can you actually visit the observatories? Is it possile to visit the VLT?
I hope to visit Chile one day.

astrofireball In reply to Tourdumondiste [2010-02-08 15:52:48 +0000 UTC]

I am an astronomer and I had observing time so it wasn't a tourist visit. I know that the VLT is open to public though, they even have a big swimming pool there! You should definitely go if you have the chance...
