Description Since I can't come up with a decent design for Bastet after a month and I'm starting
to get tangled in college matters, you guys get a Behemoth this week. Not so exciting, I know.
Sorry about that.

---Behemoth, King of earthly beasts--------------------------------------------------------
In biblical lore, the Behemoth is the primeval beast of the land, ruling over all of
the terrestrial animals. He exists as a counterpart to the Leviathan, the primal
beast of the sea, and the Ziz, the primal beast of the skies. The Behemoth is
described as a colossal herbivorous creature, with power unmatched,
representing the futility of humanity's actions in comparison to itself, and in
turn, to God himself, who tames the creature by putting a ring on its nose.
Its powers reaches its apex during the summer solstice each year, an occasion
on which it releases a mighty roar, making all animals on the earth tremble
in fear and rendering them less feroucious for the next year. This supposedly
prevents them from growing ever more powerful, saving both humans and
weak animals. According to legend, in the end of times, God will release it
to fight the Leviathan in a battle to the death, culminating in the demise of
both creatures. The Behemoth's meat will then serve as food and the Leviathan's
skin as canopies for the righteous. The famous Grimoire Dictionnaire Infernal
depicts it as a full fledged demon, taking the form of a very obese humanoid
elephant, ruling over the sin of Gluttony and regarded as one of Hell's
greatest demonic singers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This guy must have one of the ugliest faces I've ever drawn.

I actually have a funny story with the Behemoth, as he was originally supposed to be the
first design I would have posted here on DA when I started this account. But in the end
he turned out very shitty, and I posted an older drawing instead, Gabriel. Ah...Good times.

People have been trying for ages to figure out what a Behemoth actually is, citing ever
herbivorous beast possible (and even dinosaurs!) as a possibility. So, I did the logic thing
and mixed them all! An ox-rhinoceros-elephant-hippopotamus hybrid! To emphasize its power
I've tried to exaggerate a lot on its features, like muscles and tusks.

The city on its back is to give it a sense of scale, since you cant' really tell how big it really
is on its own. This idea goes back to an old comic project of mine, which featured in one saga
a city sitting atop the back of a sleeping Behemoth. So nostalgic.

Well, that's it from me, hope you all liked it!
See you all next time!

Thanks! Leviathan propably isn't going to take too much long to appear due to also being a prince of hell, although I am having a bit of problem coming up with an original design for him.
...Poor Ziz on the other hand will keep being forgotten for still some time.

Yeah, I feel that ziz is the most overlooked of the three. I don't know why if it's because we use the words behemoth and leviathan so often in our day to day speech or if it's because there the only two that have so much attention in the Bible (towards like the end of Job I think, a lot of interesting imagery in that chapter).

It's mainly because there are almost no stories at all about the Ziz, apart from, you know, just the ones that say how big it is, but so are the other two.
Behemoth and Leviathan both get much more attention for having an iconic apocalyptic kaiju fight, both being considered demons in some circles, and both being fairly ingrained in popular culture by this point. There's simply not much to Ziz apart to his relationship with the other two. And in every opportunity he COULD be used or mentioned, he's usually ommited in favor of something similar but at least a bit more interesting, such as a Rukh, or a Garuda, dunno. Not really discarting him or anything, I do think he needs some love too, but then again, I if went the extra mile to draw him, it's again just because he completes a set with Behemoth and Leviathan.

Doesn't the Jewish apocalypse involve the behemoth and leviathan having a massive battle only to be stopped by the ziz in the end?

I went just now just to check if I wasn't missing any stories about it or something. It does have a small story about one of it's eggs being flung upon the earth and the liquid inside flooding sixty cities, something I definitely didn't remember, but not a lot much more interesting apart from that, it's a just a big majestic bird all right. I don't remember nor have found anything about it intervening in the battle between the two, but I did find mention of it's meat being served to the pious at the end of time along with Behemoth's and Leviathan's... Which makes no sense unless it was involved in the fight somehow, but oh well.

Gosh, its face is a mess (in a good way)! lol
You've made the same choice I would've made if I were to draw Behemoth: why choosing only one form? Let's mix them all and create a monstruous hybrid of those animals! XD

I really like the horns. They look messy on an already ugly face, but this chaotic ensemble of features gives the perfect idea of how a primordial and ferocious beast should look like, imho.
I'm not an expert of biblical lore but I think you did a pretty good job on depicting him. It looks epic.
The city is a nice addition, I wouldn't have thought that Behemoth could've been so big otherwise. :0

Why, thanks a bunch as always!
I tried a lot to emphasise how brutish, messy and big it was...Maybe too much...I guess.
Hearing that it looks cool is very conforting actually! I almost scrapped this whole thing thinking it was too hideous for this planet...
But then I realized later that this was the whole point to begin with.............And I had nothing else to post, so whatever. Yaaaay

Yeah I think you've made the right choice by posting it. The thing is very ugly but it makes sense and gives a good idea of how a Behemoth might look like.
