Description Something simple for the first myth drawing of the year.

-Karakasa-obake, sentient umbrella-

Also known as a Kasa-obake or a Karakasa kozō, it's a famous yokai from Japanese folklore born from an old chinese-styled paper umbrella that gained sentience. The Karakasa-obake is one of the most famous examples of a tsukumogami. The term had many different meanings across the years, but is today generally understood as a type of yokai, born when an object used by humans reaches its 100th birthday and gains self-awareness. Tsukumogami usually assume a form resembling a monstrous version of the object they used to be. Unlike many yokais, tsukumogami aren't usually malicious or harmful to humans by nature, but can hold some grudge against their previous human owners depending on how well maintained they were in the their "previous life". Karakasa-obake are usually portrayed as ghastly paper umbrellas with a single eye, a long, protruding tongue and either one or two legs which they use to hop around. They don't have any unique ability or are responsible for any sort of supernatural phenomena, but instead just enjoy scaring humans with an unexpected lick... Yikes!

Basically, one of the most famous yokai of them all. If you're vaguely familiar with Japanese folklore, there's a good chance you've already seen these guys.
No need to reinvent  the wheel with them, just down to the point as they come. They're not usually portrayed wearing clothes in Japanese media, but it's an excuse to add some extra flair.
Since they're a bit worn out and can't handle water as well now that they're sentient, the Teru Teru Bozu  will help keep the rain away.

Well, hope you all liked it, and until next time!

But if it rains, who will shelter him from the downpour?

The umbrella yokai now needs an umbrella to keep him dry. The cycle of abuse never ends.

Well, he can probably try a raincoat then.....

.... which probably will result in THAT raincoat becoming another tsukumogami

Haha nice one ! good job on the "wisps" ! Adding clothes and a lil' paper doll is original indeed

There's a Gegege no Kitaro episode where a Karakasa-obake gets mad at a human who uses umbrellas as if they were disposable instead of keeping using the same one XD

Thanks a bunch buddy!
Well, I sure would have a few karakasas mad at me for losing my umbrellas every so often!
...On the subject of umbrellas, Yokai Watch features not only the classic Karakasa, but also.... This guy , which I find hilarious.

How cheap are plastic umbrellas in Japan if the guy just kept doing that? and speaking of Karakasa, he's appeared in pretty much all GeGeGe no Kitaro anime adaptations, since 1968!

From what I've seen, they were like... self service umbrellas ! This episode is from the latest series, that still continues to this day I've seen the first episodes of the first series, and would like to see more, but well, I can't find much of these with at least english subtitles

Me and the others from the GGGnK Wiki are trying to compile places where we can watch subtitled episodes (with most being available on anime watching sites, not much but still), we also found a couple subbed from the skaro hunting society, including the 1985 from a Hawaiian dvd, and a couple others!

Funny story. When I was in Australia I found an umbrella lying on the street near the opera house. I had the idea of turning this abandoned object into a Karakasa. When I go back to my hotel I found that the only promblem with it was the bent handle. After Re-Bending it I began using it as a standard umbrella. It has quite a beautiful pattern on it.

If you like seeing different types of tsukumogami, I highly recommend the anime/manga series Tsugumomo. My main complaint is that the series gets too heavy on the fan service later on. I like ecchi moments as much as the next guy, but not when they get so constant that they reach unnecessary levels. Another complaint I have is that there are characters who play a helpful role in the beginning, but then they start showing up less or lose importance as the storyline progresses. But despite my complaints, I highly recommend this series to anyone who has interest in Japanese myths and folklore.

Didn't know about it actually!
Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about.
I'm really not a huge fan of ecchi myself, but I'll check it out nonetheless, and well, I sure know a few people who don't mind it at all who could be very interested in this. Thanks for the suggestion!

Glad to hear that you’re willing to try it. The anime is less heavy and graphic on the ecchi moments than the manga. Though that opinion might have more to do with the manga being further along than the anime. Speaking of which, the second season of the anime airs during spring.
