Description Celebrating the release of Moana this week, I present you Mr. Demigod extraordinaire, Maui!

---Maui, Hero of mankind-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A demigod and culture hero from Polynesian mythology, whose deeds are accounted in numerous tales in almost all of the region's islands. A trickster figure, Maui is a cunning and sly human with great strength, wits, and magical powers of shapeshifting, and is armed with a giant magic fish hook called Manaiakalani as his iconic tool. He's raised by spirits in the heavens after being abandoned as an infant by his mother, but returns to the mortal realm and his human family after reaching adolescence. Although initially suspicious of him, his family takes him back after he proves he is indeed their child. Maui is responsible for great deeds that helped improve the life of humans, including: Lassoing the sun and beating him until he agrees to run slower across the skies so that the days would be longer; stealing fire for mankind from the fingers of the fire goddess Mahuika; creating many islands by pulling them from the bottom of the ocean with his magic fish hook; lifts the sky to its current position so that men would walk along the earth; defeats the eel god Tuna Roa and by planting his insides creates the first coconut tree... And many others. As his final deed he tries to obtain immortality for all men through a ritual involving the goddess of night and death, Hine-nui-te-po. By transforming into a gecko and crawling all the way from her genitals through her body and exiting her mouth, Maui would reverse "the flow of birth", killing the goddess of death and freeing men from it. Unfortunately, as soon as he enters her body, his friends and brothers which had accompanied him start laughing from the ridiculous sight, awakening the goddess who kills Maui with the obsidian teeth inside her, condemning all mankind to her abode after death.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His design is pretty straight forward and basic, and I considering the kind of stuff I've posted already, I was
afraid some random dude on a white background was going to be a bit underwhelming, so considering his
adventures and what he's done are a great part of who he is, I've included some background illustrating
some of his adventures. The main focus here was on imitating some traditional Polynesian patterns and motifs.

Maui himself is on par with traditional depiction, apart from his done, as far as appearances go he's just a
normal human. There's a lot a bird references in his stories, he even turns into one sometimes, so there's
some feather motif on his hair. He's also got some traditional polynesian tattoos, and a cape made of leaves
and flowers for some flair.

In the background we have some of his episodes illustrated. One of the most famous ones is his lassoing of
the sun, but we also have Tuna-Roa, the eel god as a guest, and on the background we have the goddess
Hine-nui-te-po. I originally intended to give her a proper design, but couldn't due to lack of time, so she's
reduced to this silhouette-like creature, really a shame.
The Kereru bird and the gecko, two of Maui's transformations in his stories, are included accompanying him as well.

...Well, that's it from me this time!
Hope you all liked it, and see you all next time!

It catches my eye for some reason. In all this chaos, it just stands there peacefully. There is something fascinating about it.

I was going to ask you since you were going to draw Maui if the lyrics to his song were true to his mythology.

They couldn't be more true, and very complete to boot! I actually though about not writing any description this time and simply posting a link to the song!

But there was something I was curious to know if this had anything to do with Maui's legend and if it popped up as a real creature from Polynesian mythology? Throughout the movie I noticed there was one creature that kept popping up again it was on a tapestry that was in Moana's grandmother's house. And it was on one of Maui's tattoos on the front of his right arm. It also popped up during the song you're welcome and in the realm of the monsters.

I would have to see an image to be able to confirm anything. The movie only debuts here in January...
I tried to watch the small clip available online of you're welcome, and near his right wrist I can glimpse Maui facing some kind sea serpent. If that's the one you're talking about,
it's almost certainly a reference to Tuna-Roa, the god of eels, whom Maui faced to save his wife, and from its insides sprouted the first coconut tree (Which I also drew above alongside Maui).
...But I can also see him facing some kind of giant bird and octopus on the clip, and as far as I know, I have absolutely no idea who those two represent.

Well I can link you to the full video for the song if you like Disney just uploaded it on YouTube?

Oh, don't worry! Youtube made me a favor recommending it beforehand, how convenient.
The monster I'm seeing on his right arm near his wrist is almost certainly Tuna Roa, if I'm seeing it correctly.
But there's also a multi-eyed bat monster and some serpent thing in the music too... I have absolutely no idea what those are.

Rats I was hoping that there would have been something interesting about the multi-eyed bat one. Because that was the creature that keep popping up 4 times in the move.

Hold the horses, I actually found it!
So, apparently the name of the bat is actually Peapea (also written as Pe'ape'a), the eight-eyed god of bats. Actually, not all stories from every island seems to agree he is actually a bat in itself, nor a god, but they all agree he's evil and has eight eyes.

The story is a bit strange, but it goes something like this:
Peapea kidnapped Maui's wife, and flew away with her to his island, where he was the chief of a tribe. Maui gets upset and asks for help from his mother, Hina, who tells him to go talk to his grandfather, who can help him. The grandfather builts for him a giant mechanical bird of sorts, and instructs Maui to get inside it, fly to Peapea's island, pretend to be his pet bird, and rescue his wife. Maui gets on the island on the bird, and fools Peapea, but he can't get close to Hina because of his eight eyes, since not once all of them are closed at the same time. He asks for the help of his mother Hina, who blankets the island with night, and finally, Peapea sleeps. Maui gets his wife back, and both return home inside the giant bird. Happy ending.

I don't know how trustworthy these sources of mine are, so maybe some more research is due.

the sun somewhat reminds me of Solgaleo from Pokemon Sun and Moon, the hawaiian deity of the sun Kane and the moon Hina/Lona were probably the inspiration for Solgaleo and Lunala, i wonder if you would draw those hawaiian deities?.
