Description
Long time no see!
-Odin, The Allfather-
Also known as known as Wōden and Wōtan, he’s the leader of the Aesir gods in Norse and Germanic mythology, associated with wisdom, death, healing, battle, poetry and magic, among other things. He commands the Valkyries and presides over Valhalla, a majestic hall in Asgard, realm of the Aesir gods, which receives half of those who die in battle, preparing them to serve as his army for the fateful battle during Ragnarok, the end of the world. He’s the husband of the goddess Frigg, and also the father of other gods such as Thor, Baldr and Vidarr with his wife and many other lovers. Even though he rules over Asgard, he’s almost always away from home, traveling the land as a wanderer in different guises in search of knowledge. Odin is willing to make great sacrifices in his search for wisdom, having offered one of his eyes to a magical well and hanging himself over the branches of Yggdrasil for 9 days in return for knowledge of the Runes. He rides the eight-legged steed Sleipnir, is accompanied by his familiars, the two wolves Geri and Freki and the two ravens Huginn and Muninn, who depart at dawn to fly around the world and return to Odin’s side at night to report on everything they observed in the realms that day, keeping him informed. During Ragnarok, he’s destined to lead his army in a great battle, but will be consumed by the monstrous wolf Fenrir, only to be avenged by his son Vidarr.

Lots more I could say about him, but I gotta be brief, I omitted a lot of interesting stuff.
This was another experiment with digital art again, it had been a long time since the last one I did, and I wanted to see if I could do something better with all the experience I gained doing all the fakemons. Oh right, this was supposed to be a Christmas drawing, you know, Odin is believed to be one of the influences for Santa Claus alongside Saint Nicholas. So… Happy… Christmas? I guess?
I wanted to do something a bit more simple for Odin than you usually see out there. Modern media likes to portray Odin as some kind of badass warrior, but that’s not really faithful to what he is at all, he’s more of a sorcerer and a seeker of knowledge than anything. He barely even uses Gungnir or even fights for that matter. So I decided to base the design on his typical wanderer guise and also on Gandalf from the Lord of the Ring series. J. R. R. R. Tolkien used a lot of myths and literary inspirations while writing the series, and he stated Gandalf was indeed based on Odin, so the reference is valid.
Not much else to say though, some of the patterns on this clothes are based on the Ledberg stone , and the the "belt" in his hat is the same one my Vidarr wears. Some nice continuity in there.
Well, that's all for today, hope you all liked it, and until next time!

My friend described Odin as a nastier and crankier Gandalf

Whenever I think of the story Ragnarock I'm reminded of Odin Sphere which was quite a fun (although very hard) game to play.

Oh, I love that game, and Vanillaware's games in general.
I played it back in the ps2 era, but I heard the Leithrasir version for PS4 fixed a lot of these (unfair) difficulty issues

Really? Damn. I should play that version. The Ps2 version was a real ball buster.

This must be one of the best portrayal of Odin I have ever seen,
I really like the colors, it's mostly grey but the differents shades go very well together and you can tell apart the different pieces of clothing with no difficulty and it even makes Odin's face and white beard more noticeable.
Speaking of clothes, I love the starry background and the runes on the inside of his robe as well as the smoky effect on them, it's very well done. The wings on the hat in reference to warrior Odin are a nice touch too.
Also it's a funny coincidence but we had the same idea with the valknut on the hat and the ansuz rune on the eyepatch.

Oh my, thanks a lot, I'm glad you liked it!
My original idea was to go for very colorful vibe inside his robe and clothes and a complete grayscale pallete in every else. It ended up a bit weird and he almost resembled a corpse, so this was a compromise. Glad to know you ended up liking it regardless.
The valknut was always supposed to be on his hat due to it simply being Vidarr's "belt" he's wearing from my drawing from way back, but I was actually considering where to put the ansuz, on his eyepatch or on that little broch that holds his cape together. I ended up going for the eyepatch of course, and didn't find anything else to put on the brooch, so it ended up with a generic symbol instead.

He looks so amazing ! I like the smoky robe effect, and the patterns on his clothes ! Also, you did a good compromise between the typical wide sorcerer hat and the winged helmet with this design

Thanks a bunch, glad you liked it Chev!
For a moment I considered throwing in some stereotypical viking horns in there for good measure as well, but it was too much.

Did he ever cause a human war himself? I don't remember that o.õ
Buuuut, yeah, he does have a fame of favouring the weaker side in a war just so the stronger warriors can be defeated and he can collect them all for his collection.
Gotta catch them all!
