Description
DL TO FULL VIEW the thing is retardedly hugeMY UNNECESSARILY LONG PRISMACOLOUR MARKER TUTORIAL with really bad spelling
lots of ppl have been asking me how I colour, I hope this can help even tho its really hard to understand and im really bad at explaining things and i dont even know what im doing half the time
original can be found:
total drawing time from sketch to finished scanned copy took me somewhere between 17-25 hours
SUM FAQs:
what medium do you use?
Prismacolor markers [link] I own a few copics, but I prefer prismacolors. Their nibs are harder, and so it's easier to make strong contrasts and bright, saturated blocks of colour. Don't get me wrong, I think copics' soft, brushy look is beautiful, both markers have their own unique style, I just personally prefer Prismacolors c:
where do you buy them?
I bought my first 40-something boxset at Micheals Craft Store back in 8th grade when they had some uber sale going on, since then I buy them on Dickblick.com cuz they're much cheaper xD
have you tried the generic DickBlick version of prismacolor markers?
I have a couple, but i havn't had the need to use them yet D: from what i can tell they're pretty much the same tho...
where do u buy ur white gel pen?
Micheals. I live there. it sucks up all my money. it's bad.
what paper do you use?
- I like to use my Copic brand marker paper best, it's thick and smooth, and so allows for much more color absorbance is that a word?so it's easier to get smooth blending, but regular printer paper works fine too, since it's thinner it gets saturated quicker, but will result in different, but just as nice results : D
some pictures i've done on normal 8.5x11 printer paper: [link] [link] [link]
UHM, theres probably more but i cant remember. IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, DON'T HESITATE TO ASK 8D

Dude this is AMAZING. It's so nice to see a really great artist who uses traditional media--it seems everywhere I look on deviantART everybody's using digital and it makes me feel so backwards to still be using colored pencil. So it's so nice to see a truly talented person who creates amazing art without using digital. Idk, it gives me hope, that I don't have to transition to digital art to be a respected artist haha. If this all makes sense

You have to have the best tutorials for prismacolors ever. Well even though you don't think its a tutorial, I think it helps a lot more to see how different people go about with their art process so that I can pick out the parts that I like from each. I'm not sure if I have already said this but I am ΓΌber jealous of the variety of markers and ur creativity.
I love seeing texture in things like this. I think you carry it out wonderfully. My problem is that whenever I am drawing I have this weird instinct or something that makes me want to make everything rounded without any dynamic lines or anything and then I have to go back and fix it all. It's a pain in the frikin ass but maybe its just that I don't pay enough attention....
I feel like I always write way to much in comments for tutorials that I really like....... -.-"

haha pffff dont worry abou it x3 <333 i'm happy my tutorial could be a help/inspiration to you! 8D and rounding lines isn't a bad thing, it could just be your art style : D

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Why is it that I can't get my colors to blend and look so smooth like that??
I only have like 13 prismacolor markers to begin with and I don't know how to use them AT ALL.
π: 0 β©: 1
Atomic-Clover In reply to Jazzie560 [2011-07-04 02:41:48 +0000 UTC]
it's probably because your colours are too different. no matter the technique, if you try blending yellow and orange it wont work well. you need to get the intermediate tones like Jasmine, or Yellow Ochre, or spanish orange, and blend those in a gradient to go from yellow to orange.

Jazzie560 In reply to Atomic-Clover [2011-07-04 21:59:36 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I just realized that. I finally got a set of copics. But yeah I guess I'll just have to work with what I got. Haha jasmine is a color too? Thats a flower and my name

Very helpful, as I am entirely ANAL about shading, and I've only had my markers a few months (like a 120 pack or such) so I think I'm gonna get the suggested "E00" to work with skin and some of the other skin tones
If you have a free moment, I'd love if you'd look at a few of my pieces, some of which I apologize deeply for the terrible quality as I'm working on printer paper most of the time(poor artist)
a little advice?

I just bought some Prismas, and I found it interesting that you said you should layer the lighter colors on the darker ones. I do oil painting, and usually we put the light colors down first because if you put dark first and make a mistake, it will be harder to cover. Is that just a personal preference of yours?

me either! there is something that traditional artists can offer that digital ones can't. although digital is beautiful sometimes it lacks the texture of traditional.
