A short made for Albino Blacksheep's Tournament of Flash Artists (TOFA 2012).

Round 4 Theme - Character Origins

Challenges:
- Protagonist must have characteristic strengths and weaknesses
- Characters used in the short must be newly designed (no characters made before the date of September 8, 2012)

Opponent this round:

Thoughts:
"For the final round of TOFA, I needed to do something really special. I took a huge risk in the previous round, and I got the feeling that the judges thought I was playing it too safe or plateauing. That perhaps they thought I would be relying heavily on the voice talent to carry my cartoons.

I took that as a challenge. I needed to surprise the judges.

I jossed a few ideas around, such as the concept of silly superhero, Salt Lick (has a super tongue, is weakened by deer). Partway through writing the script I realized it wasn't going to work; it was still too dialogue heavy, and predictably silly.

I threw it out, after 5 days of sitting on the idea, leaving me with only 16 days to make a cartoon from scratch.

I decided to do a story with no dialogue, feeling that if I wanted to make it as an animator and really wow the judges, I'd need to convey a story with emphasis on visual storytelling. Something emotional; simple but profound.

This is the result. I hope it surprises some of you.
