- This is happening before season 2 finale.

Nah, Luna is the clueless princess. No way she would conceive such a plot to test Twilight. And she wouldn't have really cared about testing anypony.

Ooh! ooh! maybe celestia found out what luna did and then pretended to be defeated by chrysalis to test twilight?

I think Luna just didn't know that Chrysalis will be this strong.

Very interesting premise, although it kind of clashes with the Crystal Empire test at the start of Season 3. But, it's interesting head-canon.

If this theory were to be true, Luna deserves to be killed. Any Princess who deliberately *creates* evil to put her country in danger is not worthy of the title. Heck, 100 years ago you'd be executed for less.

Sometimes you need to do something evil to defeat a bigger evil.

Maybe Sombra would not have been defeated, if Chrysalis had not appeared.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Astaenes In reply to SchwarzerRitter [2012-11-28 19:55:55 +0000 UTC]

I... can't even begin to understand how you arrived at that theory. All that would have happened if Chrysalis hadn't shown up, is that the wedding would have gone off without a hitch, Cadance wouldn't have nearly starved, Canterlot wouldn't have been attacked and Twilight's friends, mentor and family wouldn't have abandoned her. Chrysalis has nothing to do with Sombra. Her existence doesn't even begin to influence his.

SchwarzerRitter In reply to Astaenes [2012-11-28 20:03:59 +0000 UTC]

In the Crystal Empire episode Celestia and Luna talk about "her" being ready.
This comic theorizes that Luna allowed the changeling invasion to happen in order to toughen Twilight Sparkle (and as a side effect Cadence) up to deal with greater threads.

Astaenes In reply to SchwarzerRitter [2012-11-28 21:29:36 +0000 UTC]

Which makes little sense. You'd think saving Luna's sorry ass and beating the spirit of Chaos himself would be enough proof that Twilight can handle stuff. Certainly not a valid excuse to deliberately create evil to attack your own friggin' capital, subjects and sister with, just to test one little unicorn for whatever reason.

Because shining and cadance defeated Chrysalis, which means Twilight wasn't ready

It's beautiful, but if I were to make a suggestion, I would flip the orientation of some of the panels, especially 4 and 5 (possibly most of the others, too). As this is being read left-to-right, it took me a moment to grasp that Luna was meant to be seen flying from the balcony. It looks more like several figures hovering in the sky in front of her, or like she's landing in the balcony backwards. To create a sense of progression with a scene like that she should be in the balcony on the left and fly away to the right.

And yet, in the end, it wasn't her the one who stopped Chrysalis, but Cadance and Shining Armor.
Nice comic.

Star-Killer89 In reply to SpiritsOfLight [2012-11-28 16:43:54 +0000 UTC]

But why would she need to test Twilight on her brothers (and Lunas Nieces) wedding, i would see some "logic" in testing the bond between Shining and Cadence, but sending an whole army that will enslave your race if they fail the "test" is kinda extreme whoever the test is for, not to mention its kinda treason.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QuercusRobur In reply to iZaffe [2012-11-28 18:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Besides it then being creating something far stronger then you yourself, who in their right mind would do that? xD

That would mean that she has no control over Chrysalis, and thats a dangerous game she played then.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

richfiles In reply to TheOneButcher [2012-11-28 20:00:54 +0000 UTC]

That's not true... The test was not whether Twilight herself would save the empire...
The ACTUAL test was whether Twilight had the responsibility to accept her own limits, and recognize her own failure to perform the task on her own, as she was ordered to do by Celestia, and defer the task of saving the Empire to one who actually could, namely, Spike. When Twilight knew she could not complete her task as ordered, she did not prevent Spike from picking up her mantle and finishing the job for her. Had she insisted on trying to free herself, insisted on doing things on her own, she would have actually been failing the test, even IF she HAD saved the empire on her own.

The test was to see if she had within herself the most powerful tool of a leader...

Task delegation!

Oh Tia... You truly ARE the perfect politician!

Personally I prefer that Celestia had already paid for a "Twilight saves the Day" window.

But Yeah, the test was weather TS was trustworthy, or would loose her head over the word "Test" which Tia doubted after the Smarty Pants Incident.
