Ravyn awoke in the quiet of predawn. The sword lay on the ground next to him, snakes coiled as thought they had never moved. Ravyn got up, body throbbing with remembered pain. There was an odd feeling on his leg, as though there was an animal resting on it. He looked down, slowly so as not to disturb it, and saw long brown hair.

Startled, Ravyn didn’t move. She appeared to be sleeping, resting on his leg. For the next half an hour, he watched her sleep, her even breathing rhythmic and soothing. After, she began to move. She turned to look at him. Emerald eyes stared back at him through a curtain of soft hair.

“Hi” Ravyn managed, beginning to feel desire anew at this beautiful woman lying on him.
“Morning” She smiled. Her smile brightened him, but he also became wary. The memories of Luna were only too fresh.
“What did I do?” She obviously saw his emotions clearly as if he told them to her. This put him further on guard.
“Nothing, yet” His words betrayed him, he was trying to seem undisturbed.
“Yet? Someone seems a little paranoid to me” She huffed at him.
“What’s your name”, Ravyn spoke with a smoothness he didn’t know he had.
“Altea”, He instantly liked her name, it sounded like it came from afar. She must have seen the wonder play across his face, for she then said,
“I am from the south, but I came to meet you. I was aware that you were turned. Oh, did you know that you were turned?” Ravyn blinked
“Turned?”
“Oh, you don’t even know do you? Well, where to start? First there was man, your old race. Then my sire did something so horrible that that his tribe invented a curse, just for him. They told him that for the suffering he wrought, he would forever be neither alive nor dead. Unfortunately, they didn’t understand what they had done. They had given an already corrupt man the abilities of the worlds of life and death, for he is a part of both and neither. That they thought would be a curse turned out to be a gift.”

“He noticed that he was far stronger physically. What was before impossible now only barely required him to use energy. He also became faster. He could now run from one end of the village to the other in just a few seconds. He also noticed that he was getting far more intelligent. He started to become able to read thoughts, something he passed down to those he turned. But I haven’t explained that part yet have I? Oh well, I’ll get to that later.”

“His weaknesses became more… weak. His allergy became near crippling to him. He always had a fear of water, for his tribe was a plains people, and now he cannot even approach it unless it is over a bridge, and even then it weakens him immensely. He also found that he had the hunger. He needed to feed on the blood of the living in order to keep control of himself. For there must always be a balance, in this case blood of life to balance the death within himself.” Altea took a breath.

“He learned later that his curse could be transferred to others through an exchange between himself and another. He learned this through, by stealing my mate-gift. He learned that if he shared blood, he could transfer it to anyone.”

“There are now twenty of us, you were the ninth. The one who sired you was the fourth. He did it because he thought it would be funny to see a child have to see the fate of his people and then have to deal with being newly turned.” She uttered the last as if it were a curse.

“By the way, what’s that?” she nodded toward his sword.
“My new weapon. It has a bit of a temper.” Ravyn now realized that he wanted her, in every way, now.

“My, you’re thoughts are pure, aren’t they?”

“You know my thoughts?”
“Yes”
“And?”
“So be it”
