Description full title: "A Guide to Taking Good Quality, High Resolution Stock photographs - Part I - All About Cameras"
In this tutorial I'll explain tons of stuff. Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, focus, mega pixels, self-timers, etc.
(This is made for figure stock artists, but all sorts of stockers and beginning photographers can learn from this)

Full-view (zoom in) to see the actual tutorial. WARNING: Very large image! There's a somewhat printable version here: [link]

edit: Oh gods! I just signed on quick before I had to go to work and wasn't able to say thanks (no time), but now I'm back.. and wow! Another DD! Thanks so so much to `thespook for suggesting and ^bleedsopretty for featuring it..

And thanks to you for looking.

I have used camera symbols belonging to well... I've seen a few companies use them (Canon, Nikon, Pentax). But I've used them for educational purposes only. No copyright infringement is intended. Please oh please don't report me, I certainly don't make any money off of this.

0.0 you just taught me more in the 30 seconds it took me to scroll down checking it out ('cause the fav came first, most definitly!) than my photography teacher has in the 4 weeks that i have been in his class. orbably because it is 2 days a week and he likes to review a lot...>> but still!! thank you making this, i'm sure it'll come in handy in class.

This is brilliant! I already knew it myself, but it's really nice that you've outlined the basics in such an easy to understand language! This should really get some better stock images out there. I hope everyone who creates stock takes a look at this! (Also, I need a better camera. )

I can't say how thankful I am to you for explaining all of this. My cameras booklet was just too much for me to handle at once and I think I have a lot of that down already but you just explained it so well.

Thank you so much!

What you said about extracting blurred objects from a background being bad is not true. Some of the nicest images I've made have been from photos like that, it just takes effort. Out of focus objects are just as useful in photomanipulation as in an art photograph for drawing people's attention to things. Sure, Photoshop can blur things afterwards, but it doesn't look as rich as if the original photo had the blur.

AttempteStock In reply to rocksicle [2006-08-06 16:20:28 +0000 UTC]

I don't know. I just don't think it's good to teach newcomers to stock that out of focus images are good. I think newbies should learn how to take in-focus images before attempting anything else.

Sure, I've taken and used out-of-focus images in my art, as well, but I don't think I'll start posting them just because it has a nice bokeh.. I'm sure once people learn how to use their camera with proper focusing they can move on to new technicques. But if you've ever attempted to browse a good amount of the stock section, you'll understand that teaching poeple that out-of-focus can be desireable is a really bad idea.

Hi there ! Great tut - thanks for taking the effort to put it together, a well deserved DD indeed!
I joined DA recently and also just got myself a camera which I'm still trying to get used to (doesn't help that I haven't the chance to touch the manual either), so the tut really helped. Not to mention that I'm also sitting on a heap of photos I won't even have the time to use, so I thought 'why not share'? - will be keeping your pointers in mind for stock photography as well.

Pixels aren't everything when it comes down to a good camera. You need to consider the brand and type of lens used. There's a difference between a piece of crap Kodak that claims 6mp and a Nikon that claims 4mp. The chips used to capture the image need to be high quality and naturally the lens makes a massive difference.

I had 6 megapixel camera and it broke, and then I got a 12 one and I though of making stock when I had the 6 one and I was like "how on earth am I going to make stock now XD?" And then my friend broke it after I had it for a few weeks, no more art photography for me ;_;. and all I've got now is this stinky phone thatΓ€'s only 2 megapixels and I want to kill it >___>. I canΓ€t make stock, just can't ;_____;.
I think making stock would be fun though.

I remember the times, when 3 megapixels was good XD! lol : D

Gah, by the way, I loooove your stock n_n.
And your tutorials are good.
They will totally help starters, though, I know it all, from nowhere XD!

actually just recently i discovered the pixel rate doesn't guarentee 'high resolution' My friend has 7 mega pixel camera but he only got 72 resolution whereas my camera which is about the same has 400 resolution. So i think people are being misled with the assumption with higher pixels that they are going to get high resolution it just makes the files bigger not the quality better.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AttempteStock In reply to aud [2006-07-04 04:21:04 +0000 UTC]

no no no... You're mixing up DPI with Resolution - and they are entirely different things. Your resolution would be something like "3032x2008" and your DPI can be anything between 72-1200.

You see, with a 3032x2008 resolution at 72 DPI you could print that off at aprox. 42.11x27.88''. But since most printers require (or at least request) a 300 DPI, simply increase the DPI to 300 and you'll be able to print that off at 10.1x6.69''

Same goes for your friend. At 600 DPI with 7mp resolution he'll only be able to print that off at about 5.6x3.34'', so he should decrease the DPI to 300 and he can print it off at 10.1x6.69''

Remember that for posting images on the web, you'll only need a 72 dpi!
