After that was when things started to go wrong. The day after Celeste and I cleaned up at the guest house where Mother lived she returned and resumed our lessons, the one-day interruption in the routine seeming like it had never happened at all. Needless to say, I did not mention the fact that I had gone to the house to Mother, and since she did not seem to have noticed my discovery of her small black book, I didn't press the issue as well. But the night after the cleaning, I found a small notebook that had been buried in one of my room's drawers and scrawled down the bits of the notebook’s contents I remembered - if there was a time to be thankful for my pretty good memory, this was it.
Every night after that, I would spend an hour or two before bed poring over the notes I'd copied from Mother's notebook, trying my best to decipher them. They certainly didn't resemble any language that I could recognize or find, or any of the common ciphers for that matter. In all honesty I knew that Mother was the type of person who would come up with a cipher of her own to encode her secret notes, but I just had to try, y'know? She probably had to base it off of something though… right? Looking through the books in Mother's library would probably help, but I didn't know when she would be out again… and it was hardly like I could just search up the arcane and esoteric tomes she owned online or something.
"Mistress?" One night, as I was poring over my notes as always, I heard a sudden knock at the door and jumped. "C-come in." I quickly closed my notebook and hid it in a drawer as Celeste entered, a tray with a teapot and cup on it in her hand. "I made you some chamomile tea…" "Ah… thanks." I must have hid my surprise quite poorly, as she looked at me with a little bit of concern. "Is something bothering you, Mistress?" "Not really…" "Hah…" She sighed, manner decidedly way more casual now compared to back when she first came into my life. "If I may, I am not aware of what occurred between you and Mistress Dahlia, but you should try to reconcile whatever disagreements the two of you have. You're sisters after all…"
She wasn't exactly right, but Celeste wasn't wrong either. Sis and I had barely spoken to each other after the day of the cleaning, aside from the most basic greetings or when absolutely necessary - Pri didn't seem to realize anything was wrong at all, though. I wasn't even trying to avoid talking with Sis or anything, but… how could I just strike up conversation with her after what we just talked about? And yet Celeste had seen through it immediately - sometimes it amazed me just how competent she was, and how perceptive too. "Perceptive…" "Hmm?" Celeste was pouring a gently steaming cup of tea but stopped, giving me a quizzical glance. Maybe this could work…
