transcript

"The basis behind our magic is exceedingly simple! No complex spells, or runes, or rituals… what matters the most is willpower." Celeste seemed like she was really getting into her explanation, her tone all dramatic and stuff… "Of course, there are certain things that we can or cannot do, and the amount of concentration and willpower that one must have can increase drastically according to the difficulty of the magic you want to perform, but we'll get to that point soon!!" She raised up her hand and a small orb of blue flame flared into existence above it, making me flinch a little involuntarily. "This is one of the first things that we practice in learning magic! Simply hold up your hand, and imagine a flame gathering there…"

The two of us obliged, holding out our hands and closing my eyes. I tried to follow Celeste's instructions, trying to condense and gather… whatever into making a flame. It was surprisingly kind of difficult, compared to what I had done with Priscilla yesterday - actually having something to work on was incredibly different from having to make something out of thin air. "Ah!" …Had Priscilla done it already? Feeling a strange flame of competitiveness ignite within me, I concentrated even harder, trying to imagine a fireball hovering above my palm, tricking my mind into thinking that I could feel its warmth, the slight sense of weight it created as the flames warped the air around them… and then I actually could.

I opened my eyes. In contrast to the cool blue orb that was floating above Celeste's hand, mine was burning calmly with a slightly golden fire, tendrils of fire licking up around the surface of the orb from time to time. "W-wow!!! I did it!!" Hearing an enthusiastic shout come from beside me, I turned to see Priscilla staring excitedly at the burning orb that floated above her own hand, one that seemed to vibrate and emit sparks as it burned with an aggressive white glow… if anything, it reminded me of the magnesium flames that we would use to see in middle school science lessons.

"Very good job!!" Celeste clapped her hands together and smiled, her tail flicking back and forth enthusiastically. "Um… I have a question. Are the colors of the flames supposed to mean anything?" "Hmm… To put it simply, there is no one answer. There are some who have suggested that the character of your flame could be a reflection of your personality… but we don't have a way of knowing for sure-"

Ding-dong. Celeste cut off as the sound of the doorbell came from downstairs, resounding through the interior of the house once again. "Uh… are we supposed to be expecting any visitors, Celeste?" "N-No, Mistress…" She looked kind of nervous as she went downstairs, while Priscilla and I stayed at the top of the stairs to see who this mystery guest was. There was the sound of the door opening. "Oh! Ms. Dahlia… I didn't know you were coming…" Well, at least it seemed that it wasn't a burglar or something… from our vantage point upstairs, we saw a woman step into view, who looked to only be in her early thirties or even late twenties. "Is it too much to ask for me to want to visit my family?"

The woman had a head of orange hair just like mine, but maybe a little darker, and a pair of pointy ears sat on top of her head as well - perhaps the fact that this didn’t surprise me said a lot about just how much my world had been changed these past few days. The way she held herself, one hand sitting on her hip and the other at her side, spoke of an elegance and gracefulness that I could probably never hope to achieve, no matter how much I tried to emulate it. She angled her head up to look up the stairs - right into my eyes. "Come now, Valeria…" The woman smiled, looking every bit like a fox about to devour her prey. "Aren’t you going to say hello to your dear sister?"
