Description It’s mid afternoon and we’ve disembarked the train at the last photo runby stop on the schedule. We mill about around the grade crossing or make our ways to the tops of nearby snow banks to get that perfect highground point of view. A little farther down the track at the head of our string of passenger cars lies our engine, hissing just out of sight. Suddenly three quick blasts of the engine’s whistle pierce the frigid winter air, and the streamlined cars beside us jolt into reverse with a crash.

We watch as the cars roll past us, waiting for the engine to show itself at the end of the procession. The hills echo with the small locomotive’s heavy, measured exhaust:

CHFF-chff-chff-chff-CHFF-chff-chff-chff-CHFF-chff-chff-chff-CHFF-chff-chff-chff...

With a rush the engine bursts into view as it enters the clearing around the crossing. No one is at the controls. The engineer is leaning out of the cab window, a huge grin across his face, waving two imaginary conductor’s batons to the 4/4 rhythm of the symphony around him. He manages simultaneously to exchange a knowing glance with his sizeable collective audience before he is whisked out of sight by his train and a cloud of steam. We’re left wondering if we the passengers are really the ones most enjoying this wintertime steam engine excursion spectacular. I for one am convinced that we aren’t.

Hehe, nice story. I can relate fully to that engineer! One of the days I was firing at the Strathspey Railway last summer it was No17 "Braeriach" that was running which has a reputation for being an absolute brute, being an ex colliery engine and on the last trip back to Aviemore me and the driver decided to have a bit of fun. I built up the fire while we were at Boat of Garten, then when we left the driver opened her up into second valve and the end result could only be described as volcanic! She absolutely tore up the 1 in 70 climb from the station and we were having to hold her back by the time we got to the summit! There is no way that any of the passengers or anyone watching was having even half as much fun as the pair of us were on the footplate!

I envy your experience. Although I have no doubt that the life of a railway man is tough, tiring, and dangerous, and doubly so, all, in the age of steam, there is something so enthralling about the idea of occupying the cab of a steam locomotive-- with its dark corners, glowing fires, and, again, that cacophonous sound-- ground zero of the true greatest show on earth.

Braeriach looks like a nice engine. ^^

If only I got paid to do it.... It is certainly tough as it is very physically and mentally demanding (shovelling a 1 1/2 to 2 tonnes of coal in a shift and being constantly alert for the full time on the footplate), however it's most certainly worth it! Spot on with that description, the driver and fireman have the best seats in the house for the show!

She's a bit of a marmite engine (people either love her or hate her, crews especially), personally I can't get enough of her! She is an awkward, hot, uncomfortable engine to work on and if you don't keep on top of her she'll be the worst day out imaginable and can make an inexperienced crew's life hell. However if you know how to handle her, stay a couple of steps ahead of her and treat her right and you'll have one of the best days on the footplate imaginable! She'll pull like you wouldn't believe and do anything and everything asked of her. Some of my best days on the footplate have been with her.

Ohoho! Yeah, they're similar I guess. Granted, I bet they'd be more similar if 4601 was a CN design.

Haha, no kidding! No wait, you would know him. XD Well that's really cool, anyway-- if you happen to see him, let him know he put on quite the show.

I shall and her will be pleased! I take it you have ridden behind conway scenic 0-6-0 7470. I havent even seen her in person, I know Russ because he drives at Clarks and Waushakum live steam.

Well, I try to ride behind 7470 whenever I get the chance! She's really my favorite engine. Just a beautiful example of an 0-6-0. Have you been to Conway Scenic when 7470 wasn't around? She was out of service being rebuilt for about five years recently, and she's been out for tender maintenance since that.

If you ever get the chance, try to go during "Railfan Weekend" in the fall! Even if you don't ride the trains, you can just hang out in the station and yard all day watching the trains come in and out from both directions, doing all kinds of switching between trips. But on lots of regular days during the tourist season the railroad has two trains out on the lines at once, too.

Do they do cab-rides on Railfan weekend? I've always liked Clarks' railfan weekend because I can really get into the operations. since they know me and since all the equipment is running, you can ride the cabs, drive the roller around, help with maintenance, occasionally drive, yadda yadda.

You know, I haven't exactly known CSRR to give or sell cab rides, but I'd suppose that if you knew one of the engineers or something anything would be possible.
