Description No, of course I’m not done with trains yet! ^^

Not quite Spaghetti Western and not quite Steampunk, this engine falls somewhere between those two categories of fictional locomotive design. ^^ Like many of my engine designs, this one is meant to inhabit a (very slightly) “alternate” version of reality— specifically, of course, an alternate version of the Wild West.  It features a slew of features that would have been rather unusual in real-life 1870s America, but nothing particularly “fantastical.”  (Perhaps I could coin the term “Alternatepunk”...?)  In a way, perhaps, this locomotive could even exist in a fictional world such as Alex Karnes’ Lone Islands.  In any case, this engine is one of a series of three conceptual locomotive classes that I envision as working together, but it is also the only one of those three to have a finalized design— so far.

As I’ve said before, textures aren’t easy to apply in Google Sketchup, so once again I’ve relied on the program’s stock color pallet to paint this machine.  I wanted to give the locomotive a well-worn blackened look.  And again, as usual, rivets, boiler plugs, and other would-be texture details are absent.  The Stephenson valve gear, I’m afraid, is not animated (Breadman can vouch for the difficulty ^^).

UPDATE 5/24: Basic statistics now available:

Engine Weight: 27 Tons
Driving Wheel Diameter: 68”
Cylinders: 18”x28” (2)
Tender Weight: 14 Tons (Six-Wheel Standard Design)
Tender Capacity: 8 Tons Fuel; 1,900 gallons water

This engine uses an outside Stephenson valve gear, which was also used by many Cramptons-- hence the familiarity, I suppose. Good eye.

I'm glad you like it!

I must ask, I plan to make a game that mixes different generations (and steampunk) together and I found this on BEAUTY of a steam locomotive. I draw locomotives as well, and I would have never have thought of a locomotive like this. Anyways, is it alright with you that I may borrow this style of locomotive for the game?

the game, its kinda like an online game like planet side 2, but with technology between the 17th century and the steam era. I didn't make a story line yet, but I believe the game will be called "18th Warfare". one way of transportation is by train, and I think this locomotive would perfectly make it into the game.

Why hello!  I seem to have missed this comment back when you made it, I'm sorry to say.  I'm intrigued by the concept of your project.  If you're still curious about using my locomotive design in your game, I'd be happy to learn more about the project, and, if you're serious about seeing through with the game, perhaps we can work something out regarding use of the locomotive. ^^

Alright. This locomotive... It's just beautiful. And I do plan to make a video game in the future, though it may take a while. And now looking at the title of my "18th warfare" It does sound like a great project.

From what I can recall, it would be an online fighting/war game, kinda like uh.... Clash of clans? BUT it would be more complex. Same structure for fighting, but there would be MORE recourses available, like in the Civil War. Man, it's been a while

I love the idea, especially the mix of 18th and 19th Century aesthetics. ^^ I can really see this locomotive working for a project like that.  If your interest in the project pursues, definitely keep in touch.  It's also always possible that I could help with other railway-centric design elements if you needed them, such as railroad cars, other locomotives, stations/buildings/terminals, etc.

18th-20th century, actually. I like the 20th century trains too, like the Hiawatha streamlined locos.

But there is a whole bunch I still have to learn about these great steam machines. But I don't know everything :/

like the out side stephens link motion. Did you get the inspiration from swiss and german locomotives like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Atticus-W In reply to Trainandclockguy [2014-05-22 15:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I certainly did. ^^ I've always liked the look of outside Stephenson gear.  It mixes beautiful clumsiness with fascinating visible motion and easy maintainability.  I often wonder why it wasn't used more often back in the day. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trainandclockguy In reply to Atticus-W [2014-05-23 22:40:47 +0000 UTC]

it definitely looks clumsy and would be easier to maintenence but in america everything was about how well your trains looked and how much money you forked in each month and an out side Stephenson link motion does not look good to most people so that's why i think it was not made that way often but if i owned a railroad back then i would have a couple with outside link motions

Atticus-W In reply to Trainandclockguy [2014-05-24 16:30:21 +0000 UTC]

That could be true-- 19th Century locomotives certainly were built with an eye for artsy design.  But even when outside Walschaerts valve gear came into vogue, locomotives continued to be built with inside Stephensons.  That baffles me slightly. XD

another lovely sketch up art piece. I love these you should do a tutorial on how to the basics cause i cant do it all lol

Atticus-W In reply to Trainandclockguy [2014-05-22 15:45:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. Truly, there's no need for me to make a tutorial-- Sketchup is very very easy to use.  It only takes a few minutes of fooling around to learn the basics you need.  However, it helps a lot to be familiar with the basic dimensions most often used with steam locomotives (the widths of frame members, rod and valve gear components, pipe sizes, etc.) and for that a book of steam locomotive plans is your best resource.

This loco is yours for $8,000, which is a bargain considering its advanced design. Oil firing is always available, should you have faith in that fool's gold fuel!

Well... there were a number of locomotives that did have "Western-esque" styling. I've seen a few early Russian locomotives like that. (can't remember where though...)

Either way, it looks great! Looks like it would make a great inspection or Private locomotive.
