Description No, of course I’m not done with trains yet! ^^

Not quite Spaghetti Western and not quite Steampunk, this engine falls somewhere between those two categories of fictional locomotive design. ^^ Like many of my engine designs, this one is meant to inhabit a (very slightly) “alternate” version of reality— specifically, of course, an alternate version of the Wild West.  It features a slew of features that would have been rather unusual in real-life 1870s America, but nothing particularly “fantastical.”  (Perhaps I could coin the term “Alternatepunk”...?)  In a way, perhaps, this locomotive could even exist in a fictional world such as Alex Karnes’ Lone Islands.  In any case, this engine is one of a series of three conceptual locomotive classes that I envision as working together, but it is also the only one of those three to have a finalized design— so far.

As I’ve said before, textures aren’t easy to apply in Google Sketchup, so once again I’ve relied on the program’s stock color pallet to paint this machine.  I wanted to give the locomotive a well-worn blackened look.  And again, as usual, rivets, boiler plugs, and other would-be texture details are absent.  The Stephenson valve gear, I’m afraid, is not animated (Breadman can vouch for the difficulty ^^).

UPDATE 5/24: Basic statistics now available:

Engine Weight: 27 Tons
Driving Wheel Diameter: 68”
Cylinders: 18”x28” (2)
Tender Weight: 14 Tons (Six-Wheel Standard Design)
Tender Capacity: 8 Tons Fuel; 1,900 gallons water

Looks like a realistic version of The Little Engine That Could.

Now this is reaaaaally cool haha I quite like the style you have, it shows even in your 3D work! Keep an eye-out, because of this the Mighty Eagle Railroad might be ordering a 4-2-2 yard engine from your works.....in the past.....even though you just.....yeah.

Hahaha! XD Anyway, thank you very much!  I think I always drew with 3D in mind-- that's why I always drew polygons into my curves!

Um excuse me.

You made both I and the Adam stop and gape in wonder because DAMN.

Awesomely unique and MAN is that smokestack awesome. Plus the wheel arrangement and valve gear arrangement is epically unique.

Holy carp, I stunned you two?  Yay! X3

Thanks man! I've definitely used that smokestack before.  It's my favorite type. XD The wheel arrangement was inspired by some ancient toy trains I saw at the Live Steam Locomotive of the Month website, actually.  4-2-2s are kinda cool!

Props for even trying to make a render of a Stephenson link. That valve gear is a tough bird indeed. But at the same time looks very cool around a shed full of Walshearts.

Stephenson gear is a doozy, and even trying to think of a way to mount it on the outside of an engine isn't easy, either. XD Luckily I found some dimensional drawings of Stephenson parts in a book on 19th Century locomotives and was able to adjust some of the dimensions to fit the mounting I envisioned for this engine.  All of the rods and links ARE modeled separately, should an animator come along willing to tackle this project for me.  I'd also be open to having the entire Stephenson valve gear assembly be animated as one "unit," as if it were the geometric equivalent of a side rod.  That would at least provide some interesting motion in a game or film.

In any case, yes, the valve gear was a definite element in giving this engine the "different" look I was going for. ^^

I know what you mean. I'm trying to draw some engine plans for the project I told you about. I commission my friend to model them but he needs drawings to make em and I do have to draw them. Two engines I need to draw have this very gear. I just hope when I draw it it'll come out decent.

Any tips my good loco artist?

MEHEHEHEHEHEH.    However I must say the big end of that connectingrod is VERY big, going to have a time counterbalancing that.  I also love the soviet porch railings!

Hm, perhaps you're right-- but I liked the detailed look of it. ^^ And ah, yes, you WOULD appreciate those outside railings.  I'm a sucker for those, and this loco seemed right for them.

I really like the style your locomotives have! Keep up the good work, and excellent job on this drawing! By the way, those ditchlights seem perfect on this locomotive for some reason.

Why thank you very much. ^^ The endbeam lamps were literally one of the last things I added.  I knew the pilot beam needed SOMETHING to liven it up, and then I remembered I had some spare lamps lying around...

funny how i drew up something almost exactly like this a few weeks ago. 'Course mine was an English styled sterling single given more american styling.

I drew it up after my friend mentioned he had a English styled single live steamer he had been working on some years ago, he said he *might* be able to find all the parts. Hopefully i'll be able to scrape up enough money to buy it and finish the project. He didn't mention how complete it was, but said it had a boiler, which is always a good start.

Just remove those railings along the running board. Makes getting at the tallow pots and slide valves with the spout a little easier when under motion.

Atticus-W In reply to Eddie-Sand [2014-05-21 16:03:16 +0000 UTC]

I was going to make a joke about needing to be in an inspection pit when under motion, leaving the handrails well out of the way, until I realized that this engine of all engines has outside motion, ruining my point altogether.  Curses.

...Outside handrails are cool. XD
