Description Finished Samade. Hope ya like.
I learned a lot on this.

would like to thank pogi for all of his help
he's a much better artist than I am,
and never hesitates to answer all of my stupid questions.
I owe this guy a lot. (he's doing commissions now btw)
be sure to spam him. : P

also would like to thank Kimeko (from mangarevolution.com)
for the "channel" technique she taught me.
I never thought to do things that way before.
it opened a lot of new possibilities for me.

*edit*
a bit embarassing: I forgot the two '' lines on the last character.
made it say samate. oops. it's fixed now, it says samade.

Hey man
this is probably by far the best work I have seen from you
the line quality and color stands out like crazy
and of course as I've said before, I really dig that painterly style. The fact that you did it in photoshop makes me want to track you down and break your tablet for achieving it before me and doing better than me
the only comment that I can actually give to this piece is the atmospheric perspective that you have
I really have trouble doing this becuase my colors always come out too saturated. You seem to have no problem at all and it does give a sense of depth - but the illusion it gives my eyes is there is possibly too much, or its too ...i guess symmetrical. Seems as though half of her body has the cooler colors and the other half is warm, as if she is just stepping out of a steamed fog room or something...
just something that appears to me
great work though man, if I could rate it, I'd give 5 out of 5 for sure, just for being so freaking cool, and achieving my personal goal
keep it up and tweak that style to the max, you've got something going there my friend

wow, that was a long post O_O (that's so rare on Deviant art. much appreciated though! )
thanks for saying it looks painterly! I've been trying again and again to achieve that look, and feel like I'm more closer now than I've ever been. Funny thing about the atmospheric perspective is that I felt it was too little. I think I wanted something more dramatic, but perhaps it's a good thing I didnt achieve it this time around. the reason I did it of course was to simply give the picture depth. I know it ends up looking like steam, but maybe I can fix that on a future piece by choosing a different color?

Thanks for all the support D!

to tell the truth I haven't achieved it myself so I cant really give any true information from experience
looking at such styles as hyung tae kim or yoyo seems as though grays are added
more cool and gray
but in their style it seems to substitute some of the shadows rather than the whole piece
I'm currently reevaluating my style to come up with something more catchy and if I do find some new tricks I can pass em on to you if it'll help
keep it up though, you're doing one helluva job

I always want to learn, so any tricks you pick up or develop would be great. ^^
I still have to make a tutorial for my new things. : | I"m just so slow moving about it.
who is yoyo? can you show me a link?

augustc4 In reply to DSanchez [2005-03-14 01:23:02 +0000 UTC]

oh. lol
well I just chose white and brushed lightly over the colors
and in other parts I chose the same color, turned it a bit more gray, and brushed over the area.
I think the real trick was brushing the lineart to match though. the more the lineart blended with the colors, the better is seemed to fall into the background.

ah I see what you're saying
I've always heard that coloring the line art made it 'fit' more but never tried it
I'll have to experiment with it
thanks

augustc4 In reply to DSanchez [2005-03-14 01:31:20 +0000 UTC]

the problem I ran into was separating the lines and making them colorable. (seeing as my lines are real messy). but thanks to kimekos channel idea, it was easy.

DSanchez In reply to augustc4 [2005-03-14 01:53:49 +0000 UTC]

I usually ink my lines digitally so there is no residue anywhere.
and its also on its own layer with transparency so that i can just preserve transparency and color with airbrush if I wish to change any of it
maybe give that a shot?

augustc4 In reply to DSanchez [2005-03-14 03:44:55 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's a lot better of a method I'd think. but I'm too lazy to ink, haha.

hey!!! teach me that channeling thingy!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

augustc4 In reply to Khalitzburg [2005-03-13 18:39:00 +0000 UTC]

cavemen can't be taught anything!
lessee...

select all on your pencil layer.
copy the whole layer
make a new channel, and paste.
invert the channel with ctrl-i
control + click the channel to make a selection of it or just load a selection from it
make a new blank layer (still have a selection) and fill with black.
preserve the transparency on that new layer, and now you can color your lineart!!!

did that make sense?

Thank you for sharing the process of how the piece developed.
The dragon pattern on the sleeves is a nice touch.
But man, how do you expect her to fight in those shoes?
Couldn't you have given her some big stompy boots with shin guards?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

augustc4 In reply to xmlmonkey [2005-03-13 18:26:47 +0000 UTC]

originally I had her with stompy sandals, but they had too much of a neo look. so I opted for these more traditional (even though impossible) sandlals. lol. thanks for the kind words xml. ^^

xmlmonkey In reply to augustc4 [2005-03-15 08:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, I just watched the first volume of "Samurai Champloo" so if Mugen can fight in those sandals, so can she.

As an aside, I was watching Mononoke HIme yesterday and the monk was wearing geta like these... Still can't figure out how they would work...

Great job!

well.. the scroll work was just pencil lines I drew in photoshop
then I clicked "preserve transparency" and colored on the lines to match (kinda) lol.
I think she's about to fall over in those shoes.
