Side Quest 3
Animal Totem
As far back as you remember, you've had an affinity for your chosen Animal. Draw yourself (civilian, child or senshi) encountering/interacting with your "Spirit Animal". Do you dream of them speaking to you? Do you own one as a pet? Did you see one in the wild/zoo and have a natural connection? Please keep in mind these are not magical creatures that can speak to you (unless you dream it!).

“Okay, you can pick whatever movie you want – but only one, okay? Remember, I have to get movies your stepdad and brother would like, too.”

            Ava looked up at her mother and repeated in a quiet voice, “Okay mom, only one movie – one each!”
            Avas’ mother reached down and pet her head with a fond smile and nodded, “Very good. You can ask Laura to make sure it’s not another game – I’m going to look in the scary movies.”

            Ava waved at her mom’s friend and the curly-haired brunette waved excitedly at her, “Hey Ava! There’s some new DVDs on the shelf, d’ya want me to show ya?”
            Ava shook her head and smiled, “No, thank you. I remember.”
She pressed on towards the new releases and walked slowly – step…step……step………step…

She glanced up at the mirrors that lined the area where the ceiling met the wall, allowing Laura to keep an eye on Ava, as well as Avas’ mother, Anita, to check on her – Mom was two aisles over, and Laura was smiling at her. She looked back down at the new DVD movies, and something stood out – a lot of times, Laura would pull all media releases and line a whole shelf with all iterations of the media – Like with the new DVD’s. Laura would get the VHS, as well as games, magazines, promotional items, and TV Series. She liked putting those movies and shows back in their own personal spotlight, and it helped keep customers from wandering around to find the other items for a title.

            Ava reached out and picked up the VHS – mom didn’t have a DVD player yet, but Ryu-nii had told her to wait for Christmas – oto-san had gotten one for her mom – but she didn’t care about any of that. She was mesmerized by the image of a great black and white animal captured in a graceful arching leap over some rocks. On the rocks, it looked like a young kid, and he was raising a hand towards the black and white shape. She turned the VHS over in her hands and saw a black lump coming out of the water to greet the young man.

            Ava hurried to the counter where Laura was talking to some guy with brown and white hair – it looked like a burned cinnamon bun with old icing on top.
            “’Scuse me, Laura!” Ava called, reaching her hands up to hit the flat of the counter and Laura leaned over the countertop to see her, “I found something..!”
            “See ya, Laur,” the man said, waving and giving Ava finger guns. She blinked at the gesture and then turned to Laura.
            “Aaah, I felt like you’d get this one. You like the whale?” Laura asked her as she reached to put it on her moms account.
            “Whale?”
            “Yeah, Willy. He’s the whale with the kid, Jesse. You know it’s based on real life?” Laura set the movie aside and leaned over to talk to Ava, who moved closer to hear better.
            “I’ve never heard of Willy or Jesse.” She said plainly, but Laura caught the little smile on the girls face – hook, line, and sinker.
            “Willy is based on Keiko, and Keiko is a killer whale that lived in SeaWorld – you know, that place I told you about?”
            “Bad place..? So Kiko is bad?”
            “No, hon, Keiko is a very good whale – a lot of people realized how much he missed his family because of this movie, and they freed him a little while ago. He lives in the ocean now, but he’s still getting used to living in the ocean again. He looks much happier!”

            As Ava rode in the backseat of the car with her mom driving, she held onto the VHS movies in her lap, watching the city go by in a blur. She thought about what Laura had told her at the store, and listened to whatever her mom was playing in the car absently – her mind was full and rushing with images of what she imagined to be free-swimming killer whales. Jumping and slapping the water, flipping their tails, squirting water from their mouth, blowing through their blowhole.
            She looked down at her movie and wiggled a little in her seat, excited to see how amazing Willy was.

Years later…

            “Ryoma! What do you have to say for yourself!” A young woman shouted as a young man shuffled towards a getaway car – his two colleagues tripping when he stops.

            When the amateur burglar turned, he saw the unmistakable suit of a pretty soldier and he felt a little sick. She had long dark hair, and the softest pink illuminated the edges. Her eyes were fierce and her arms crossed as she stood, clad in white and pink, with traces of dark, cool grey. She did not look happy.
            “I saw where you just gout out of jail – are you so eager to return?”
A long time ago, she had watched a movie where the villains got what was coming to them - a great loss of money because of their own aim to be treacherous. Today, she was a guardian of justice, blessed by the light of the moon and the love of her patron animal. Thank you, Keiko.
