Description Phaeastrunnus notonyx is an uncommon paradisostrunnid found in trees near the stunted coastal forests of Avigonia's southern tip (on the western slopes of Notonyx).
Here we have a male in his breeding regalia. Mating season lasts for about a month in Mid Spring, soon after the winter storms have past. Otherwise, the males resemble the females, drab, grey-brown starling-sized birds. P. notonyx is normally solitary, scanning tree trunks for insect prey.

I really like the butterfly-like feather extensions. It gives him an interesting and somewhat disorienting profile...

Sometimes, the male uses his plumage as a startle-display, though, only during mating season.

They extend the "winglets" only when they're climbing along a branch, all of the paradisostrunnids who have winglets don't fly with the winglets extended.
Besides, P. notonyx molts his breeding finery once mating season is over.
