Description
I really wanted to do a variations sheet for Quilava, one of my most favourite Pokemon ever! I mean, they are volcano weasels! What's not to loveSpeed bred Quilavas are the smallest of the bunch, with short legs, small ears and a very streamlined and flexible body. Their head and body shape is based on stoats and weasels and the head is very triangular with big eyes and a small snout. The markings on Quilava bred for speed are usually very smooth and don't have a lot of contrast. I used the official artwork colours for this one, as it looks most like what I imagine Quilavas would look like irl.
Attack bred Quilavas are stockier than the speed ones, have a more developed muzzle and larger teeth and claws. Their fur is longer and tends to bristle at the joints. The markings have most contrast, and this is the 'breed' where abnormal markings are most likely to occur, such as lighter eyebrow spots and earrims. I based these guys on martens. Along with Speed, these are most preferred and often bred together to get well-rounded offspring (which are then given as starters)
Defense bred Quilavas are the least common of the three, and it was the toughest for me to think up. I based this one on badgers and polecats, stockier than the Attack Quilava, with longer, stronger limbs, smaller eyes and ears, and probably the thickest fur to protect against attacks of enemies. Defense bred Quilavas are slower (but still fast) and more gentle than their short-tempered kin. They also tend to have the least streamlined markings.
Winter Quilava is based on the fact that stoats and weasels get a white winter coat when they live in cold areas or on higher altitudes. This form is probably only seen in colder regions or with mountain folks who don't travel around a lot. Like stoats keep their black tail tip, Quilavas never lose their red fire spots. The winter fur is extremely dense and keeps the Quilava warm and happy (and it's trainer too, I imagine, if it would curl up around their neck like a scarf).
Shiny, well, that speaks for itself I think
Ash Marked and Yellow Throated are two marking options I though would fit nicely. The Ash marks are relatively common and are located near the fire spots (hence the name) and along the spine. It is not formed by actual ash or through the use of fire attacks but is a natural variety. Yellow Throated Quilavas are rarer, their throats are a brighter, often yellowish hue and have a jagged shape. It is often accompanied by light ear rims or eyebrow spots.
Hope you like it

Ah nice, stoat-y although the Bulbapedia page actually made a fail comment on it mainly being stoat based due to a lack of tail.. This is a huge mistake, as stoats do have tails! Someone should fix that, as just looking up pics of stoats you can see they have tails.. I have no idea how Bulbepedia made that fail note but yeah...
Looks amazing btw! The ermine one is the cutest!

Thanks Haha I'm well aware of stoats and their anatomy, as you can see in my gallery. Odd that someone on BP would write Quilava is a stoat based on a lack of tail though, all species of mustelid have a tail... But with regards to Quilava's general look and body/head shape, I'd say a stoat is still the closest thing.

Oh man, weasels, that's so cute.
I always imagined Quilava to look like slender crested porcupines with the flames.

Thank you
Oh, I haven't heard that interpretation before, but that's sweet too! But I am very fond of the weasel family, and especially quilava (stoat/weasel) and typhlosion (badger/wolverine) always reminded me of them. No wonder this is my favourite starter line.

Ohh man, I'd seriously consider it but unfortunately I don't have any dark green fur, nor do I want to import it (very expensive!) :/ If someone would commission me, it would be a different story

oh man! I understand! I will definitely commission you once I collect enough money from selling my dolls! I would love a shiny or winter coat quilava for sure!

Aww that would be very nice And yes shiny or winter would be easier as I do have the colours for those (though if you wanted a regular Quilava I could probably import something good, it's just that I prefer not to do it for pre mades as I have no guarantee I'll earn back the money I spent on that haha)

See kids? It's not that hard to make your own "original" PokΓ©mon characters in your fanfics/stories!
By the way, artist, very interesting series.

Indeed, no need for neon-coloured furs. Though, they should draw whatever they enjoy best, I prefer more natural designs myself.

Hmmm in your style, I think maybe fennekin would be top of my list. I'm a sucker for all the fire starters, but fennekin in particular would be awesome translated into semi-realistic style :3 Who doesnt like fennec foxes?? XD

Those ash markings <3
Though I can see defense bred quilavas having a bit of extra padding all around while attack bred ones have the thickest padding in areas such as the neck.
