So...this is the fruit of my confinement on an island...in a cabin...A lot of this is Hitchups-inspired. I've been in a very Hiccup/Astridy mood...
Aside from the one Astrid scene thing I have going on there, the rest of the doodles are some strange head-canon hybrid thing I have going on. Like a future stemmed from canon with Hitchups influences.
From top to bottom:
Just Hiccup and Astrid doodles...I don't know why I like drawing people wet. It must be the hair.
Then there's an adult (wet!)Hiccup with Toothless. I would say middle-aged, but back then middle-aged was probably late twenties/early thirties.

Okay, so that's it for re-introducing myself to the pencil. I can't tell you how many times I tried to control-Z every error I made.

I think it's a fact of life that everybody and everything looks better when they are wet......EVERYTHING
Love how you made Astrid in this picture, especially in the middle....honestly, it's my favorite drawing(s) of her that you've done so far. Her hair (which I think looks better not braided 
...Darn, she looks so good there -- that picture alone, with the text, and colored, would make a great wallpaper
That bottom Hiccup picture....it looks great and all...but Hiccup comes off as kind of....erm....feminine to me; I think it's because that baby he's hugging in the middle made his shirt bunch up...and now it sort looks like he has breasts XD
That bottom left night-fury baby in pouncing-mode is bad-ass; plain and simple.

I've been having a pretty easy time of doodling Astrid lately and I don't know why. Probably because of the latest chapter. The middle Astrid picture was with the intent of coloring it someday...simply because I wanted to see how soft, yet striking I could make it with the firelight.
I like Astrid's hair down too. I have another picture of her, which is mostly Hitchups!canon, that has her hair down and her looking non-violent. That one may be up later today since it was chosen as the "not quite a sketchdump" status.
I can kind of see what you mean about Hiccup. When scanning we lost a lot of shading, so the curve of the baby Night Fury is too open. Also, Hiccup's chin-scruff didn't really come out. Whoops! Well, that's why its a dump!

....XD, it just goes to show just how much better Astrid without the attitude problem -- you actually feel like drawing her, much less drawing her well. Makes me wonder if their is a movie-story of her where she's more approachable (probably)....the sad thing is, the attitude is what makes her Astrid and makes her unique, so taking that away would make her feel less special :/
Well, I guess it depends on how you pull it off - a tragedy for example, could make her value the people around her more...or it could just make her worst XD. It depends largely how you perceive her and which direction you want to go. It's definitely possible though to stay true to her character and reasonably give her a slight adjustment.
Hehe, don't worry - I feel weird if I don't critique artwork even a little, and just post "this is awesome! you're a genius" or something. Love how warm Toothless looks like -- strangely, I suddenly felt he is very aquatic by the way you curved him...
What he is based on again? I remember once reading he is like a dog, cat and bat combined, but that could just be personality-wise (fits); his head and neck though are so smooth like a water snake...I don't know; for a species not known for prowess in water, Night Fury's seem slightly made for it....

Well, I think Astrid's attitude in the beginning of the movie was sort of annoying, but in a "I'd probably butt heads with you all the time, lady". Right before she had her dramatic change she had suddenly escalated into someone inexcusably cruel, which made skipping whole acceptance/friendship/support thing and jumping straight into the romance so hard to swallow - and not just for me but for so many people. Really, Hiccup and Astrid could be such a great canon couple if they had just slowed down a little. I think having Astrid accept dragons first, support Hiccup, and, over the next couple movies, start to fall for him (while Hiccup got to know Astrid in return and not whatever fantasy girl he had in his head) they would have made such a solid romance out of it.
Sadly, it didn't happen. Sometimes I wonder at how Astrid had a fanbase at all with how jumbled her character turned out. And then I remember that the movie was directed for a younger group...and not at an audience who would psychoanalyze every action to the point of stupidity -_-
I'd like to keep the Astrid we were first introduced too, just have her a bit more mature. While more likable, she still needs that Astrid-flare

You basically summed up what we've all been thinking for a long time now: and it's probably exactly that it's a kids film that it's the way it is and we're not supposed to think about it so hard XD.
That said though, I'm not ashamed at all - psychoanalyzing is something we do to the things that we love; we probably have more passion for the things we love, like the movie, then the little tykes Dreamworks were targeting in the first place.
But you're right, she needs to cool her head but still have that fire that makes her, well, Astrid -- growth and maturity is the only way to go then. That's why I prefer Cami because she's already perfect for Hiccup just the way she is. Nothing's wrong with Astrid, but you can't just pull off romance between them like the movie because it's just plain wrong. SOMETHING needs to happen to make their relationship actually believable.
Canon-wise, that could very well happen in the next movie -- tension, whether sexual or however in nature, could finally happen to make them question their relationship. No matter which way I describe it, bottom line, they need growth -- Hiccup and Cami maybe, but you can't stick Hiccup and Astrid in a closet and expect them to get together because it just isn't gonna happen.
Afterwards though, is a totally different story -- because really, Astrid is really really cool when she finally has grown up a little

Middle aged Hiccup can be yours. I kind of like how he came out there, I think his bone structure stood out surprisingly well for being drawn at some obscure angle as I usually draw. Hiccupgetbackinside babies!

Wet! I just realized I did the wet frostbite pic. Weird wet-drawn moods. Maybe it's cause you are near water...and I'm just thirsty.
I was surprised to see that *other sketch missing but It's good you want to do more with it, and if it is about the hands, I still say the hands are fine. You cannot have small hands when you handle big weapons.
