Description
Name: Apsarini Rajawali
Born: April 10, 1867; Batavia, Java
Died: August 26, 1950; Jakarta, Indonesia (age 83)
Allegiance: Assassins
Bio: Apsarini was born in the middle of a dirty Batavia slum to two Assassin parents who were descended from Arab immigrants. She never got a chance to know her parents, however, as they were brutally murdered by Templars when she was barely a year old. She was left to be raised by her older brother, Jaga, who grew quite overprotective after the loss of their parents. Apsarini grew up watching the politics of her homeland get bent and warped with Dutch intervention, and always swore to free the islands from their colonial regime. Her fellow Assassins were not as eager as she was however, because they were still desperately trying to recover from the purge led by the Templars after the VOC was dissolved in 1800 and the Dutch East Indies was formed in 1816. Many of the Indonesian Assassins were paranoid of stepping out of the shadows, including Apsarini’s brother, and it often led to some serious arguments between her and the Brotherhood.
In 1873, war had broken out between the Dutch colonists and the Aceh people, of whom the Assassin Mentor, Teuku Ibrahim Lamnga, was a member. The Mentor saw this war as a chance to fight back against the Templars at last, his army gaining support from Italy and the United Kingdom. But he was killed in action on June 29, 1878, leaving the Assassins in a scramble and their influence on the war ripped away. Lamnga’s wife, an Acehnese noble named Cut Nyak Dhien, took on the role of Mentor in his place. She was never fond of Apsarini and her antsy attitude, and it only got worse when the grief over her husband drove Cut into the same secluded paranoia as the rest of her Brotherhood by the time of the war's ceasefire on October 13, 1880. The Mentor tolerated Apsarini for Jaga’s sake, however.
In 1883, Apsarini’s rebellious nature got her into serious trouble. While trying to uncover a Templar conspiracy led by their Grand Master, Huibert Bousmeester, Apsarini had gone rogue to do things her own way. She ended up limping back to the Assassin base after getting severely beaten, unknowingly leading the Templars to the base as well. Boumeester’s army burnt the base to the ground and killed many of the Assassins inside. Cut Nyak Dhien, furious at Apsarini, excommunicated her from the Brotherhood and sent her into exile in Singapore. Apsarini fell into a drunken depression over the next few months, feeling she had nothing left to live for in her life. No home, no family, no Brotherhood. She was lost.
But things finally turned around for her in August 1883, when a British Assassin named Evie Frye stumbled upon her and felt sympathy for the girl. She offered to take her under her wing and get her back on her feet, as well as help her stop the Templar plot independently of Dhien’s orders. Apsarini agreed to the partnership, and the two worked together over the next few weeks to track down Boumeester’s remaining agents and the Piece of Eden they had been searching for. Boumeester ultimately ended up stealing the Piece from the Assassins, however, and Apsarini was forced to track him down to the volcanic island of Krakatoa, along with her brother Jaga, who had tracked her down after a change of heart. The two entered the Precursor Temple inside the volcano, and discovered the Templars meddling with the technology. Boumeester had summoned the digital consciousness of the isu Lucifer, and tried to bargain for power. Lucifer instead possessed the Grand Master’s body, and set the volcano to erupt. Jaga and Apsarini barely escaped with their lives, but still got caught up in the destruction of the massive eruption once they reached shore. Boumeester had escaped, and the Dutch East Indies were in tathers.
Apsarini swore to hunt Boumeester down and pay for his crimes. In 1891, she discovered that he had returned to his homeland of the Netherlands, and so she decided to hop aboard a ship bound for the same place. By 1894, she was hot on his tail in the Hague, and had also developed a mysterious case of morning sickness after a drunken night sometime along the way. Apsarini had discovered that the Templars were plotting to assassinate the Dutch queen, and so she rushed to stop the plot. She and Boumeester fought viciously, and during their brawl, he revealed himself to her to be Lucifer, and also let it slip that she was pregnant with the child that would become the great grandmother of Apsarini's descendant who would stop Lucifer. Apsarini managed to stab Lucifer and end the life of his Boumeester host, but his consciousness had hopped to another body and fled the scene. The war still on but the battle ultimately won, Apsarini was thanked by the queen with membership into the Order of Orange-Nassau and passage back to the Indies, where Apsarini would hide the Piece of Eden she got from Lucifer in an abandoned temple on the island of Lombok.
Apsarini never held down a family (her only child was given up for adoption because she knew she wouldn't be able to raise it well) but she did form a loving relationship with an Japanese Assassin named Hayami Yamamoto in the late 1890s. In her old age, she had learned to find her inner calm a bit more. She had to, given the traumatic political atmosphere that sprung up in the 1940s. She led the Assassin cause during the Japanese occupation of the islands during World War II, and did her best to keep the country safe during the following War for Independence. She died soon after the Revolution ended in success, hoping that her country would be left to something better than what she left behind, hoping the Templars that she so vehemently opposed would not step right back in and ruin her islands once again.
