Description

I'm back yey

Name: Arbogast Spanhauer

Born: 1555; Muttenz, Old Swiss Confederacy

Died: After 1578; Muttenz, Old Swiss Confederacy

Allegiance: Assassins

Bio: Arbogast was born to a German-speaking parents in the town of Muttenz in the Swiss Canton of Basel in 1555.  Arbogast was a member of the prominent Spanhauer family, who had influential ties to the local church, and who had deep roots with the Assassin Brotherhood, which is continues to keep to this day.  Arbogast himself was raised in the midst of the turmoil that was the Protestant Reformation. The city of Basel, which Arbogast’s hometown sat on the edge of, had served as the central basis of operations for the Northern European Assassin Brotherhood for decades, being the death place of a previous Assassin Mentor, Desiderius Erasmus.  For his training, Arbogast would be brought to Basel to be taught by Erasmus’s successor: Amalda Annabel.

Arbogast served as Amalda’s star pupil, bringing his family great praise in the eyes of the Brotherhood.  While the specifics of his life are not very well documented, his legacy is. His son, Arbogast II, was born in Muttenz in 1578, and took after his father pridefully.  As a family, they led the campaign against the Swiss Templars that were left over after Amalda’s purge of them at the beginning of the Reformation. Arbogast I even took up the title of Mentor after the death of Amalda in 1585.  Arbogast II married a charming young lady two years his junior named Anna Wartmann in 1601, and they bore six children: Bernhardt and Wernhardt in 1602, Barbara in 1607, Anna in 1608, Hans in 1614, and Arbogast III in 1616.

The fate of Arbogast I is unknown.  Records of the Spanhauer family have been recorded and kept in the Church of St. Arbogast ever since 1527.  However, in modern times, many of the records that predate the year 1600 have become faded to the point of almost being illegible.  Due to this, the family history is sparse. One educated guess is that Arbogast I died during a severe plague outbreak that killed a seventh of Muttenz’s population in 1628.  This scenario would infer that he passed just three years before his son followed him to heaven's gates.

These deaths seemed to have had a rather negative impact on the family, as many of them fell into poverty or serfdom in future generations.  When Arbogast II’s grandson: Wernhardt, youngest son of Hans, passed away in 1737, the economic hardship led to his widow, their four children, and three of her siblings-in-law abandoning the Old Swiss Confederacy entirely.  In May 1740, they travelled on the Rhine to Rotterdam, and then onwards to England. There they boarded a ship called the Friendship bound for the American colonies. They landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in August 1740, where they would settle for the next two decades.  Wernhardt’s family made sure to get into contact with the American Assassin Mentor, John de la Tour, and his prodigy (and future successor) Achilles Davenport, in order to set up valuable connections that would help their efforts in the New World.

The Spanhauers (soon anglicanized to ‘Spainhour’) lived peacefully in the colonies until they came under heavy persecution along with the rest of their Assassin brethren during the Templar Purge during the Seven Years’ War.  The family made a move to a community called New River in 1760 in hopes of escaping, but a raid led by a Native tribe whom the Templars backed forced them to flee again and settle in Bethania, North Carolina. It was only after the efforts of the Kanien’kehá:ka Assassin known as Connor to undo Templar dominance during the American Revolution that things began to look up for the family.  The grandson of the Wernhardt who passed in 1737, a lad named Johann Jacob Spanhauer, married Anna Fulk, daughter of prominent Assassin Andrew Fulk, in 1773. They were the grandparents of Abraham Spainhour, born 1817, who married the star pupil of Canadian Mentor Aveza Bellamy: Priscilla Abbott, in 1842.

Their eldest son, James David Spainhower, would go on to be one of the most respected members of the Hoosier Brotherhood in Indiana, earning prestige fighting the Confederate Templars and running several charitable acts in his home state afterwards.  While he had a rough schism with his grandson, James Alfred Spainhower, who hardly had the best of morals, the Assassin connection continued on. James A.’s mistreatment of his son James J. Spainhower would lead to the boy running away to join the American Army during World War II.  His poor experiences in life transferred onto his son Jim, who himself became traumatized by his own experiences in the Vietnam War. Jim was the first in the line to retire from the Assassins entirely due to his experiences, and while he tried to keep his son Tim and daughter Jen out of the Brotherhood as well, they found themselves joining their ancestral Creed on their own terms anyway.

Tim's own son, Carter, would find himself running with the Hoosier Assassins as well in 2013, when he and his cousin Chelsea, another Spainhower descendant, began to work tirelessly over the next few years to eliminate the Templars that oppressed their great city of Indianapolis.  They killed the Grand Master in 2015, and in 2016 they joined forces with their friends Jacob, Ava, Ben, and Ruby, to take down an evil force risen from the time of the isu who was hellbent on the destruction of humanity. To this day, the Hoosier Assassins continue to operate under the guidance of the Spainhowers and their friends, proving that even though Arbogast I himself is mostly lost to history, his legacy is still one that was strong enough to live on into the modern world.

Hi Jeremy Most of my family tree research has come from a combination of information on genealogy sites and the Indiana State Library.  Muttenzdescendants is one of the main resources I've used to get the farthest back in the Spainhower line.  Unfortunately the story circulating online in the genealogy communities seems to be that the records prior to the mid 1500s are stored up in the Church of St. Arbogast in Muttenz, and that the writing isn't legible to the few researchers who have travelled there to see them in person.  This is strictly anecdotal from what I can tell however, so I can't really confirm or deny that fact without seeing the records myself.

Other resources I've generally used are ancestry.com (though I find this tends to be more helpful for finding dates and locations rather than actual biographical information), and  WikiTree, among others.  Everyone in my personal branch of the Spainhower family tree past the 1700s I learned about mostly in local physical sources, i.e. the Library I mentioned.  I've done a fair amount of research on the Spainhower lineage, so I'd be more than happy to share any information I have in a private note with you in order to help you push your own research project along

Awesome. So Mods, what's next in this story-line? Are you going to become a Master Assassin and start recruiting others to the cause? Are their going to be mutant Assassins now? What about Assassins from other worlds/dimensions/galaxies? What absurd Piece of Eden is there going to be this time? Let me guess, "The Bongos of Eden"? That's cool right? Anyway, keep up the good work as always.

XD We actually have something really shark-jumpy planned for a fanfic in between this arch and the next.  It technically doesn't break any lore but it is dumb.  It's a fun dumb tho and I think y'all will still like it.
Then after that, the current line up for time periods is this: Protestant Reformation, Australian Frontier Wars, English Civil War, and First Crusade
