Miriam's life had always been plagued by some form of shadow looming over her shoulders. She was originally born on August 21, 1791 in North Carolina to an enslaved couple. While she herself was too young to recall the abuse they faced, the stories her parents would rarely tell filled in the gaps later in her life. When she was just a baby, her parents escaped their plantation with the help of local Moravian sympathisers. They fled northward to the Northwest Territory, where slavery was frowned upon. In the town of Vincennes, they came across another quaint little family: the MacKenneths, who became loyal friends with the Matthewses and helped them settle down into a new life. Miriam herself became best friends with the MacKenneths' daughter, Grace. The two girls were inseparable, even on the days when Grace got them into trouble and misadventures and Miriam wished they could be inseparable. Despite her anxieties though, Miriam always stood by her best friend and protected her. Especially after Grace lost her mother in 1794.

Grace, crippled by the loss and weighed down by the responsibility of taking care of her entire household, changed drastically from the curious little girl she used to be. She became quiet and aggressive, and only ever found solace within the walls of her household. Miriam was always devastated seeing her friend like this, and did her best to offer her little comforts and cheer her up. Nothing seemed to be a permanent solution, however. That was, until Grace got roped into another misadventure to drag Miriam along on in 1811. Given a variety of tasks by a mysterious woman named Kokumthena, Grace and Miriam suddenly found themselves in a world of spirits and monsters about to go to war with one another, with the forces of man as their weapons. Kokumthena, the creator goddess of the Shawnee people, chose Grace as her prophet to fend off the evil forces threatening to burn the land. And so Miriam once again found herself in a position where she really wished she and her best friend weren't as inseparable as they always would be.
