Description
Since I disappeared on my anxiety-provoked hiatus, I was playing around with sketches of Pokemon Variations, so I decided to buckle down and actually finish one. Obviously of my favorite Pokemon.Krookodile:
Krookodile are large and formidable predatory Pokemon that primarily live in arid desert environments, however they like all Pokemon display remarkable adaptations depending on environment and available prey. Here are listed several of the more prominent members of this surprisingly diverse Pokemon.
Common Krookodile (Diablosuchus criminalis): Also known as the Slender-Snouted Krookodile, this variant is the most widespread Krookodile subspecies, it's long snout armed with conical teeth allow it to effortlessly sift through sand and ensnare fast moving prey items. One of the larger variants, typically growing between 14-19ft tall, and weighing 12-16 metric tons, they are characterized by their narrow and relatively gracile skull. However despite its relatively fragile appearance, the skull is capable of exerting enormous forces, able to swiftly crush an automobile between its jaws. This wild-type variant is the most common of its kind to be trained by professional Pokemon Trainers, though their aggressive nature necessitates caution.
Known Abilities: Intimidate, Moxie
Salt Sand Krookodile (Diablosuchus Dominus): Known locally as 'Salties', these Krookodile are the largest recorded subspecies, with fully grown males averaging between 16-22ft tall, and weighing 18-25 metric tons. They get their name due to their habit of hunting in the vast salt fields in Unovan deserts, they also frequent coastlines to feed on marine mammalian Pokemon such as Sealeo. As such they have evolved specialized salt glands to expel excess salt from prey captured in these environments. They are also highly nomadic predators, patrolling vast distances in search of prey. The forelimbs are enlarged in this variant, hinting to their increased usage in restraining or dismembering large prey items. Unusually aggressive, even among Krookodile, this subspecies is largely considered too dangerous to train under normal circumstances. Possessing a nearly indomitable spirit, they often refuse to listen to Trainer commands, and may even attempt to eat unattended teammates.
Known Abilities: Intimidate, Moxie
Smooth-Sided Krookodile (Diablosuchus morteres): A relatively docile variant, also known locally as 'freshies', these Krookodile are found only in Kalos, and small isolated areas in Unova. Their nickname refers to the fact that this variant does not venture into salt rich environments, though they do in fact possess salt glands, they appear to avoid these areas strictly due to the presence of Salt Sand Krookodile, which have been known to kill and cannibalize their smaller cousins. This variant is among the smallest Krookodile, reaching only 12-14ft tall, and weighing 7-12 metric tons. Their jaws are armed with smaller teeth than their larger relatives, which speaks to their habit of primarily predating on Pokemon much smaller than themselves. Though they have been recorded taking big game when resources are scarce. Considered the safest Krookodile to train, they are widely sought after by Trainers, which has led to them being relatively rare in the wild.
Known Abilities: Intimidate
Northern Krookodile (Diablosuchus Tenebris): Immediately distinguished by its dark coloration, this variant is found only on a small island outside of Galar. They are also the smallest Krookodile Variant, even smaller than Smooth-Sided Krookodile, reaching an adult height of 11-13ft, and weighing 6-10 metric tons. However they make up for their lack of size with a swiftly cunning nature, and unusually long hind limbs, which allow it to reach speeds much greater than other Krookodile. They have been clocked at over 30mph. Long dextrous forelimbs also end in four claws, rather than three, giving additional dexterity when manipulating objects. These Krookodile are also competent pack hunters, working in groups of 4-6 individuals to corral prey into chokepoints. Considered the most intelligent variant, they have been championed in the usage of professional Pokemon battles, relying heavily on their speed, and the use of their clawed hands.
Known Abilities: Moxie, Anger Point
Greater Tusked Krookodile (Diablosuchus Maiais): This unusual variant possesses extraordinary dentition, which it uses like a spear to gore fast moving prey. These are skilled endurance hunters that hunt in dense forests, pursuing its quarry with impressive maneuverability. The long teeth in the front of their jaw are deeply rooted to resist the impact of their unique method of attack. It overlaps in size with the Common Krookodile, though often being more heavily built. This rare variant is found in isolated forests in Northern Sinnoh, though is known to occasionally find its way into Kalos. They are seldom used by Trainers, due to their rarity. However their unpredictable attacks draw the appeal of quirky Trainers.
Known Abilities: Moxie, Anger Point
Coastal Krookodile (Diablosuchus pelagasis): Perhaps the strangest of Krookodile in appearance, this variant is a rare nomadic migrant, found on the shorelines of various regions, including Unova, Sinnoh, Kalos, and Johto. Unique among Krookodile, they are well adapted swimmers that frequently cross stretches of water, sometimes traversing the entire length of shallow seas to reach new hunting grounds. Their long snout that is surprisingly thin, is perfectly suited for lunging into water and capturing Fish Pokemon like Magikarp and Basculin. They approach or even rival Salt Sand Krookodile in size, with a height of 15-22ft, and a weight of 17-25 metric tons. Though their most distinctive feature is their dorsal plates, instead of possessing two distinct rows like in other variants, Coastal Krookodile have evolved to have a single row, the middle-most plate being elongated into a distinctive fin or 'sail'. This adaptation is used to aid in thermoregulation, tilted towards the sun and rapidly warming the Pokemon's body after a swim through cold ocean waters. The claws are also distinct, being more hook-like than other Krookodile, this allows them to capture slippery marine prey. Very few members of this unique variant have ever been trained, however they demonstrate a similar temperament to the Common Krookodile, though their thin jaws are not capable of the extreme bite forces of the other variants. Trainers of this subspecies often resort to supportive tactics, or even relying on Special Attacking moves, such as Dark Pulse, or Earth Power.
