I...think...I've got it.
Well...almost. This is the design thus far that I have liked the most. I think I realized after doing 'the Bog Witch' design that what I was having issues with was the overall bulk and shape of the body. I usually make the designs fairly bulky because, again, I design with a suit actor in mind on the inside...this new "improved" design can still accommodate one, but it wouldn't be the typical design I usually go with. Looking at it, actually, gives me a lot of anxiety to figure out how that would even work.
But still...I thinned it out; and, while I want the monster to be mostly androgynous, I gave it more feminine qualities. I also did what I've been wrestling with NOT doing, and tried to make the face more human, and more like a woman. Because from the beginning there's been this unspoken bit of inspiration I keep avoiding that was: "What if Sadako or Kayoko or one of the more famous Japanese ghost urban-legends...was a kaiju?" I still wanted it to have yokai and oni influences, but mostly, if I'm being honest, I liked the idea of Godzilla fighting was is essentially a giant ghost. And thus far, this has rung the truest.
I like the idea that the face is actually fairly human most of the time, but it can twist and contort into something truly horrific and animalistic. I didn't mean for it to take on such snake-like qualities in the monstrous form, that was a complete accident, and I think in further tweaks I will soften that with something else...but I do like the idea that the mouth can stretch to a larger size when the need arises. Maybe to make room for that "spectral arm" attack I keep considering.
I'm actually sort of relieved. This has been particularly grueling for a design process, especially for something I'm just doing for myself. Luckily I've been on a huge drawing kick, one I haven't been on in LITERAL YEARS quite like this, so I'm not really tired of it yet. I have a lot more designs for this one than I intended on having, is my point.
