Description This is my Wings of Fire OC, Pathseeker. He is a purebred NightWing with no powers, despite his name. He's a nervous little boy looking for some friends (or a girlfriend, you know, priorities) and who struggles to make his mark on the world. At the time of the volcano's eruption, he had recently turned seven years old. When all of the NightWings flee and he, having been injured, is left behind in the chaos, he journeys through one of the portals and across the desert once he has healed in search of his tribe, but he doesn't find who he was expecting.

Instead, he runs into a dragon he never thought he would find in the desert: an IceWing who sees this weak NightWing as a chance to redeem her tribe. At least, so she thought.

Many thanks to Sahel-Solitude (hope I'm doing that right, never used a mention before) and their YouTube tutorials! If you haven't seen them and you don't have a lot of dragon drawing experience, I would check them out! They help with proportions and walk through each tribe's differences.

I am going to keep drawing my OCs (I have several that I am still designing / figuring out how to draw) but for practice drawing dragons I think I'm going to do the Headshot-a-Day Wings of Fire Challenge (sta.sh/0226o5iumeuz ) although I might not be able to quite keep up with doing one every day, as I have other responsibilities. Still, it'll be fun to give it a shot!

Hey, there, found this cute piece and I didn't expect a story to go with it. I'm all for stories in fact, I'm drawn into anything with a story attached. I look at this and I'm thinking, the quality is just so that I'm not sure whether or not it's on purpose, it seems more flat and cartoony like something from a kid's tv show. The lack of shading in most areas and present in others makes it feel flat and the colour palette, is good but not varied as one expects colour to be when under light and shadow.

www.jeffmiracola.com/blog/wp-c…

Those lines on his neck, I feel are little wrinkles and can be blended and blurred and sharpened slightly to make it into shadows than lines. If his horns are round and curved then it's going to be darker around the edges and lighter towards the centre, or reverse if the light source is coming from the background. His scales and skins would have more texture to reflect his tribe, it can be shiny, rough, or even slicked and there are loads of techniques to achieve that and all available on youtube probably or just google it.
Bear in mind, these suggestions are very specific and aimed at a realistic approach, but that's mostly because I paint as close to realistic as possible, I emphasize a lot on shading and colour variance. An artist can have a very stylized and cartoon way of painting and that's fine. So that's why I was sure and that good you know, you got options. Though if you are going in the direction of realism or semi-realism, use real life references like crocodile or snake skin even just to see how thing shine or look in full, half or dim light. It really does help a lot. Even if you're not aiming for that and going for the stylized look, references can be really useful for coming up with things like shape of the heads or horns or any additions. A dog-headed dragon for example with an ox's horns or something, go crazy, go create.

Seriously though, he's a cute thing and I hope they hit off and they have an exciting journey together, you could write a book like this.

I really appreciate the advice - thank you so much! Your points on texture are spot-on. In some of my more recent pieces I have gone for a bit more detail and shading, but textures are something that I forget to consider

Hello hello, just popping in here form project comment~
So first off I would just love to say that I love dragon drawings and the way you designed this one look very well though up. The colours good well together as well as the general composition that makes up a good dragon design (layering the scales and adding depth with them being one of my favorites.) I personally have not drawn a dragon in a while let alone post a picture of one, however I hope my constructive and supportive comments help out as I go a long here.

now with great drawings comes great responsibilities. These include, while not always fun, studying, training yourself, and using your references,  different styles and taking your time. I notices the lines on certain areas like the leg on the bottom have some shaky lines and whether it was rushed or maybe just needs more time (because you can only improve) I would recommend practice on linework

Next off, add some shading I know as an artist in training I have some history with shading, and especially what tools to use, how to do it and so on. however whet I get it down, and just right, those shadows and highlight are going to make your art come to life even more than you could hope. And with a darker colour pallet that's really going to make your work pop ^-^ I notice you do have some, which is a great start! Use youtube and internet sources to strengthen your usage of that though. While the style of dragon these references include is not exactly like yours I still think they offer some good tips, and they are all foudn right here on DA so take advantage of the great community here as well.

Hope that was some help. All in all though I really do love the design. I saw this books series in my library and had eyed it down thinking about reading it and now I think I will check it out.

It is helpful, thank you! Shading is something that I know adds a lot to a piece but I am still figuring it out - thank you for the links!

Hi! Here from ProjectComment

Excuse me for my English, sometimes I write incorrectly ‘cause I’m steel learning.
So… I really love dragons, especially dark! You have some good ideas in your arts and ‘tasty’ descriptions. Also gray, brown, green and purple are great pallet! As I said, I love it.

But the work has a weak sides.
Do not worry! You can fix it

I will try to help you.  First of all, you should to start with basic. Yes, it sounds boring, but results will be amazing! I promise you. For example, you can start with Digital drawing basics (find it on YouTube). Watch videos about rendering,
construction, forms and etc.
Secondly, how about some dragon’s anatomy? I believe, you can draw the scale.
And, please, don’t afraid to use more contrasts! More different shades, in-between tints, texture, highlights, and etc. Just experiment! Try new things.
Please, work on your lines (lineart)
More practice and you can everything!
I pick some pictures, hope it will useful for you!

Overall your piece and design is amazing - and please don't take my comments as hurtful, you are very good, but every artist has place for improvement! ^_^
With best wishes,
Yan

First off, I have to say, incredible job on creating your OC, Pathseeker! I read his whole backstory you put in the "Author's Comments" section, and this is incredible! You deserve 5 stars for this! Definitely going into my favorites!

Thank you so much! Wow, you noticed this quickly

I'm glad you like it! Your tutorials have been a great inspiration to me and convinced me that I could draw fanart for one of my favorite series. You made it look so easy and it really helped! Especially your tips on the crest and splitting the head into thirds.
