Description PART 9

EXT. WEDDING SHIP

(The ceremony is continuing.)

MINISTER: … as long as you both shall live?

VANESSA: (with just a hint of arrogance) I do!

(There is a loud off-screen EXPLOSION momentarily rocking the boat. A SHOWER OF WATER cascades onto the deck amidst the startled wedding party.)

MINISTER: (recovering) Oh, goodness! Uh… where was I? Oh, yes. (clears throat) Then, by the power vested in me, I hereby pronounce you-

(Suddenly, the sound of loud CAWING echoes from above. Everyone looks up to see Scuttle & his battalion of BIRDS invading the ceremony. People turn to the sides of the boat where an army of sea lions, turtles, lobsters, etc. have climbed up the ropes & riggings, plopping on to the deck amidst the FLABBERGASTED wedding party. They completely disrupt the ceremony in a wild comic frenzy of activity.)

ERIC: Hit the deck!

(The animals start to zero in on Vanessa. Bluebirds ZOOM under her skirt like fighter planes. Pelicans dump water and seaweeds on her head. Lobsters SNAP at her tush & starfish plop onto her. She angrily starts pulling them off.)

VANESSA: (shouting viciously) Get away from me, ya slimy little-

(The sea lions suddenly start BOUNCING her on their noses & toss her into the wedding cake. She snarls furiously as she rises, but the dolphins SPRAY her. Scuttle then SQUAWKS loudly into her face.)

VANESSA: Oh, why you little!

(She starts STRANGLING Scuttle by his neck, but quickly realizes she’s let her guard down. No longer being the picture of sweetness & innocence as Eric looks at her strangely. Immediately, she reassumes her former attitude, releases Scuttle & clings to Eric.)

VANESSA: (meekly) Oh, Eric! Eric, I’m frightened! Help me!

(Eric starts fighting off the creatures, defending his bride-to-be. Scuttle realizes he’s got to find some way to reveal to Eric the TRUE identity of his mystery maiden. He gets an idea, flying down to the lower deck of the ship.)

Don't worry, he's in the next panel. Besides, it would've been too crowded anyway.

At last! And this one does not disappoint one bit, I cannot praise it enough. But before delving into the particulars of that, a brief question: Where did you find the screenplay? I've read one of the numerous copies floating around the internet before, but the version I read definitely did not have all of this description of the play-by-play of the scene. I'm very sure of that in particular. It also makes me curious about how differently, if at all, the scene reads in the final screenplay...

Anyway, where to start? I adore the chaos of the piece. I adore the different colored starfish. I adore the seaweed, and the way she's just completely, and utterly mobbed here, the bird pulling her hair is especially great as a detail for that. Her facial expression is great, total, flustered shock with just a hint of fear. I love the fact that you've gone with the trashed hair look. And I especially love that you included the cake, both on Vanessa and just what the destruction of the table entails, with the broken glass while so many things happen from every angle to her. It's fantastic. The addition of the jellyfish is a fine original detail, and I'm glad to see the flamingos. It always bothered me a bit in the film that they're shown going to the ship but never show up or do anything once they're there. Your textures, as always, are great here, particularly on the hair and the water. On that note, it's interesting that fabric of the dress, what can be discerned, doesn't look very comfortable. Her earrings are a nice touch as well as that lobster that looks like it's trying to climb up her. This is just in general a masterpiece as an adaptation of the stalled wedding goes, and it's particularly thrilling to see in your series, both because you're bringing a unique artistic vision to it, and because it's so rarely attempted in fanart of any kind. I understand of course, that aside from being challenging, many artists who do tackle Vanessa as a subject do so because they are fans of her beauty, and this snapshot in time hardly shows her at her best. In short, utterly fantastic.

A couple of minor quibbles and questions then: Is she wearing pearls there in addition to the shell necklace? I don't have any problem with that, but I'm curious for your reason on it. Although after looking at it for some time it's clear why her skirt is flipped up slightly, the bluebird closest to it must have just flown out, it's not immediately obvious looking at it that that's what's happened, largely I think because the other birds are all around her, so it doesn't create the impression that multiple ones of them have zoomed through her dress. Finally the scale of her body seems slightly odd, though I think that may just be because of the position of flipped up portion of her skirt, blocking her hip there makes her appear slightly compressed.

Anyway, as I say, those are very small observations and they don't mar the otherwise excellence of this panel at all. This is a treat and was well worth the wait.

This scene is one scene that Disney would not be able to improve upon using live-action.

Thanks a lot. I know this was the panel you’ve been waiting for.

The screenplay I got was from Disney Wiki, but you are right about the description here not being the same as it was typed there. When I first copied it, not only did I read through for spelling/typing errors, I made a few small changes, but only how some aspects ended up in the final cut (that were made better); like King Triton and Sebastian’s talk after the battle (which was much better than the original’s silent glances), Flounder being able to actually talk to Eric instead of just miming (which did make a tiny plot hole), some lines being rearranged (“Before the sun sets on the third day… third day… third day…” was said when the wedding ship first takes off instead of at Scuttle’s warning) and the wedding being crashed to name a few. I don’t think doing that is wrong since 1, the MAJOR aspects that got changed still remain intact and 2, I did it to be an overall mishmash of both versions.

The background was just a recreation of this shot . The flamingos I guess got removed from a standpoint of “what is it they could DO?” in terms of a battle tactic (which does stump me). The fabric I didn’t intending to look uncomfortable. It’s just supposed to be a lace-like pattern embroidered onto it (not that it’s SUPPOSED to be made of lace, ‘cause it’s not). I DID intend on making the torso, skirt and hip… “bustles” I guess they’re called all different types of fabric. It probably looks uncomfy because of the wrinkles/frumps and along with my trying to make my own design, I was heavily influenced by this cosplayer’s costume (there’s more images on flickr of her). The lobster climbing the dress was made to replace the nose pinch ‘cause if I did that, it’d just look too cartoony. I was thinking of making her nose a touch red, like bruise marks from when the lobster DID pinch her, but it looked too much like a drunk’s red nose or sunburn. I’m not gonna argue with your “rarely attempted” section, ‘cause there’s some aspects that artists can tackle better than others (not trying to brag) and to make a mess like that look appealing out of context is about to be complicated. And I also still kept it in the same sense of how in action movies, if one person even gets a little scratch/wound that’s noteworthy for the rest of the movie, it’s gonna stick the whole time and not be gone the next scene (if that makes sense).

Yes, she does have pearls. In some fanart of TLM, I noticed that Ursula is usually given more jewelry, like bracelets on her wrists (that’s also done in the parks) and a pearl necklace to go with her nautilus necklace. Sometimes the nautilus necklace is strung with pearls, sometimes it’s a seaweed-like substance or it’s the 2 necklaces together. I never meant to have the bluebirds fly under her skirt, I just wanted to do that pose instead of having the skirt stay grounded ; it’s just more frantic-looking. If I did make the birds go in that position, they’d be blocking stuff. It’s also intended to look like one storyboard sketch of the scene where the birds are circling her instead. And yeah, the skirt flipped up does make her look shorter (as well that chunk of cake on her hip) and everything that happened being shoved in at once.

Thanks for the clarifications and interesting tidbits. You certainly did justice to the script in terms of spelling out the scene a little more without getting tediously specific, I was just intrigued by where the extra details could have come from.

As for the details themselves, I agree with you on the flamingos, I've always been a bit stumped on that too. I suppose what the flamingos could practically do would be ripping or yanking her veil askew or off? Or maybe her hair? On that note I've often thought it's interesting that so many artists go with hair-pulling if they tackle this scene: I've had a lot of conversations with people who think it really happened in the film, and that's one thing that doesn't. Anyway I can understand why from an animation standpoint they didn't want to come up with anything extra, especially because the flamingos are much more equal in terms of size with Vanessa. I just always felt cheated by that in the movie itself. And that's a good call on the background, the scene passes so quickly that while the broken table always sticks out, I'd forgotten about the broken glasses. And lace, of course! I was searching for that word and couldn't quite come up with it. To be honest, in the chaos here, the dress does kind of look like it's made of lace, but this isn't a pristine shot of the dress where we can really discern the pattern that well. In a way I like the fact that it looks uncomfortable, Vanessa would wear an attractive dress even if it was uncomfortable, not a practical but less flattering one. I know that's not your intention, but it still works well. That's a great cosplay and I can see the influence now. That's an interesting take on the lobster, I can see why you omitted the nose pinch from a realism perspective, and the lobsters do climb DOWN her dress in the movie, so having one reaching up fits. Also having the pinch done here wouldn't work as well because it'd block part of her face. In a more detailed comic of JUST this scene it wouldn't matter so much, but the expression on her face is a huge part of an isolated depiction of the scene. It's too bad now that I think of it, I don't think I've seen any independent artists try to recreate the nose pinch, and that would be fun to do. I like the pearls from the standpoint of being yet another thing sliding around, adds to the frenetic motion and energy of the scene. And okay, I can see the birds circling her perspective, I think I was just trying to figure out WHY her skirt was flipped up a bit, though I suppose that's explained by her frantically flailing around all over the place. I'm definitely glad you went with the flipped up look though. Not only does it add more chaos, more dynamism, it's such a great detail that reinforces yet again, on top of everything else, when defending herself, her dress and shoes are not doing her any favors in this situation. And a final note that I love the cake being in the background and on her as well here. Very few artists utilize the cake, and you've used everything.

Thanks again, I'll be watching for the next panel.
